Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (3300-1500BC) single piece sickle. Knapped from dark grey-black flint, the sickle is an elongated sub-oval in plan, with the cutting edge being relatively straight and the outer edge more convex. The outer edge is thicker than the cutting edge, measuring 4.82mm and 1.94mm respectively. Both ends of the sickle have been worked to a tapering point. The sickle was created using bifacial retouch which covers both faces. There has been further abrupt retouch along the cutting edge. The sickle measures 115.82mm long, has a maximum width of 30.22mm, a maxim…

A complete flint sickle of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 BC – 1500 BC). Length 73.0mm, width 48.0mm and 12.5mm thick. Weight 40.24g. This single piece, bifacially worked, sickle is crescent-shaped in plan and has been produced on a primary or secondary flake. It is light grey with some lighter mottling. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion at one tip, although the morphology of the bulb is largely lost by having been retouched. There are also indistinct ripples on this face that are associated with the conchoidal fracturing. Short flaking around most of the e…

A complete flint sickle of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date (2500 BC-1500 BC). The implement was made from a large tertiary flake. However, there are two tiny areas of cortex on the ventral surface. It is roughly crescent-shaped in plan with truncated ends. The ventral face is slightly concave and has percussion ripples with retouch around the concave and convex edges. The dorsal face is slightly convex with retouch around the concave and convex edges. All the retouch around these edges is semi-abrupt and scaled. At the larger end there is retouch which is parallel and abrupt. O…

A late Neolithic – early Bronze Age (2,100-1,500 BC) single piece flint sickle. The sickle is crescentic in outline with invasive flaking and a medial ridge on each side and it has been bifacially worked. It is formed from black, glassy flint with a number of large inclusions. A small amount of cortex (approximately 5%) remains on the inner edge at one end. The end with the cortex also has less invasive flaking suggesting this section formed the tang for hafting. Polish is visible along the outer edge for approximately 49mm from the tip. It is similar to a sickle found at Milde…

Complete single-piece flint sickle of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3000 BC – 1500 BC). Length 83mm, width 36mm and 19mm thick. Weight 48.71g. In plan, the cutting edge is straight and the outer profile is evenly curved. The initial flaking on both faces has been carried out with a hard hammer and the edges appear to have been created by the use of pressure flaking. There is no evidence for a bulb of percussion or any wear along the cutting edge. The implement has a whitish patina with small areas of iron oxide staining.

A Neolithic flint possible sickle, measuring 138.07x41.71x15.49mm and weighing 83.81g. One long edge is straight while the other is curving. The curved edge has low angle retouch with pressure flaking at the edge. It has polish/ gloss on both faces of the knife at the edge. Both faces of the implement have had retouch, especially towards the curved edge, although one has had rather more work than the other. The straight edge has no retouch. The flint is grey in colour with some lighter grey patches. Mike Trevarthen comments 'This could be classed as a …

Incomplete fragment from the tip of a knife or more probably sickle knapped from a light grey coloured flint probably dating to the later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age periods (2500-1800 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular with a bowed curved edge; it is lentoid in cross section. Both the ventral and dorsal faces of the flake have been reworked. This secondary reworking is best seen on the curved edge where detailed neat small flakes have been removed by indirect retouch and pressure flaking. On the dorsal face this working extends up to the mid point of the blade, with a series o…

Tertiary waste of mid grey coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age period (3500 – 1800 BC). The flake is irregular being broadly sub-triangular with a bowed curved edge. Clear secondary pressure flaking facets can be seen on the dorsal face along one edge. The purpose of this flaking is unclear and it is likely that this flake has been removed from a much larger tool, possibly a plano-convex knife or sickle. The flake measures: 15.6mm length, 13.2mm width is 6.1mm thick and weighs 1.27 grams

Tertiary waste of mid grey coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age period (3500 – 1800 BC). The flake is irregular with a bowed curved edge. The flake has been heavily reworked although the type of artefact is difficult to ascertain. The artefact type is probably best described as a scraper, although it is a particularly poor example. One edge has been heavily reworked with multiple parallel sided facets. The curved edge also has reworking although this abrupt flaking with a hard a hammer in most places. The ventral face is also flaked but less intensively…

Incomplete elongated laterally curved biface in light grey / white patinated flint with spotty iron staining. Invasive percussion flaking covers most of both faces although some of the original (?tertiary) flake surface survives unmodified. The proximal end is broken. The intended tool type is obscure. It may be a rough-out for a sickle, though this is far from certain. 93 x 34 x 16mm. Neolithic (perhaps early).

Toffee brown flint with cortex, the surface of which might suggest collection from the East Coast, sickle. Thin flake with broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. Both long edges bear angled invasive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, as does the shorter side between them; the straighter edge bears similar retouch executed from the ventral aspect. Although short, this does not appear broken from a larger or longer object; a spur projects at the base of the longer cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 50.5mm, …

Pale grey flint possible sickle fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A slightly tapered thin sub-rectangular blade fragment of lentoid section with covering angled scalar retouch across both its sides. Misty patina has developed over struck surfaces, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. It is broken at its broader end; as this interrupts the patina, it is probably recent damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 21.1mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 3.7mm, Weight: 1.80gms

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age sickle fragment, the pointed tip is absent, broken transversely by a bending fracture, leaving only the thicker basal half of the implement, it is worked from an elongated nodule of mottled grey and black flint, with some slight iron stains, both faces exhibit patches of thin, weathered cortex where the flakes failed to meet in the middle. The flake scars are from direct soft hammer percussion, with some of the earlier flake scars that are still visible appear to be hard hammer struck, the cross section at the break is lenticular.
