Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Neolithic polished flint axehead which has been broken widthways and then reworked. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The surviving part of the axe is the larger butt end of the tool. The butt end is rounded, with straight sides and the break is also straight - widthways. The break has also formed a hinge fracture. The axehead looks as if it has been extensively polished in its earlier use, but when it broke it looks as if it has been reworked, as it has also been extensively knapped. A small piece of cortex is still visible, possibly suggesting that the polished …

A small tranchet axe made from a large flake, 89.2mm long, 46.8mm wide and 25.9mm thick. The implement is made of dark brown flint with numerous lighter and darker cherty inclusions; about 5% cortext remains. The upper, dorsal face, has multiple arrises; at least 7 flakes had previously been removed from the core but later retouching and possible flaking from use makes an exact count difficult. The ventral, lower face, has two large facets with again multiple scars from retouching and damage; these have removed the bulb of percussion/bulb scar. The visible bulb scars and percussion wa…

Neolithic chipped and polished flint axehead. The axehead is pointed oval in section, 155.3mm long, 62.8mm wide and 38.6mm thick; it weighs 427 grams. It has a curved cutting edge 61.8mm wide, with a finely honed edge. From the cutting edge it widens slightly to 62.8mm then both sides taper gradually towards the curved butt. The butt is also chipped to a sharp edge but is not honed by grinding and has blunting retouch towards both sides. Both sides of the axe have been ground to create flat edges, one 119.1mm by 4mm at the widest point, the other 134.1mm by 4mm. Parallel polishing gro…

Knapped flint implement. In shape and forming technique it appears similar Mesolithic - Early Neolithic picks although it is much smaller. It is also similar to the Mesolithic tooks known as fabricators and it was probably used to dig small holes or to work wood. It is 67.4mm long, 25.3mm wide, 16.3mm thick and weighs 29.7 grams. The implement was produced from a much larger flake that has been extensively reworked, possibly several times. There is extensive blunting, low angle, stepped retouch at the proximal end, extending two fifths of the way down the sides. The distal half has b…

Incomplete Mid-Late Neolithic (2900-2100BC) chipped and polished flint axehead. The blade end of the axe is complete while the butt end is missing, the general shape and size suggests about a half of the original length remains. The axehead is pointed oval in section, 96.3mm long, 67.5mm wide and 29.9mm thick; it weighs 220 grams. The curved cutting edge is the widest point from which both sides taper gradually towards the butt. Both sides of the axe show chipping, polishing and possibly pecking. Polishing appears to be concentrated at the blade end with the area towards the break alm…

Palaeolithic Acheulian handaxe of ficron type with a long tapering point and large, partially worked, butt. The point is formed with invasive shallow flaking and is pointed oval in cross section. There are small areas of natural cortex remaining on one side. The point widens and thickens to the large lozenge shaped butt. The widening is a fairly consistant taper down the ficron but the thickness tapers gradually at first before stepping out more steeply half of the way down. The butt is large with some long, shallow flake removals on two sides and the base; the base also has areas of h…

It is generally symmetrical in plan and profile with a slight S shape to the edge, more prominent on one side to the other. Barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of Early - Mid Bronze Age date (2150-1150BC). The arrowhead is triangular in plan with two notches in the base creating barbs each side and a central tang. The barbs are uneven, one 4.4mm wide, one 7.8mm wide and end in straight breaks that are probably not original as on complete arrowheads the barbs are usually as long as the tang rather than much shorter as here. The loss of the end of the barbs makes it difficult to securely assign the arrowhead to a formal type but it is probably a Green Low or Conygar Hill type. The tang is 4.8mm wide by 7.2mm…

The axe appears to have been originally oval, symmetrical in plan and profile although only one quarter is now complete and part of another quarter. Both sides are completely covered in shallow invasive retouch and the edges show some hackling and breaking. There is an old, irregular break across one end which has removed c.50% of the handaxe, there is another break down one side which has removed the edge, both are accidental or natural. A fragment of a Neolithic polished flint axe. Axes such as these were one of the core types of tools used in the Neolithic period from circa 3500 - 2000 BC. The axe has been knapped from a nodule of flint and then ground and polished over its entire surface. All that survives of this flint is the cutting edge and the lower end of the axes blade. The entire butt end has been removed by many breaks. The surviving fragment has a pointed oval section. The edges of the axe have not been chamfered. It was common practice for broken axes to be re-flaked as this one has been but rarely were t…
