Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An early Neolithic polished axe of white flint, slightly chipped and broken but retaining the classic profile and smooth texture. At the distal end the dark flint below is visible in the flat bottom, and it can be seen at another point further up in the axe where it has been damaged. A large removal is visible on the ventral face, along with a slight amount of iron staining and elements of a darker grey patina.

An incomplete probable tranchet type axehead of Mesolithic date (8300-4500 BC), missing both butt and cutting end. It measures 74.68x39.60x23.57mm and weighs 66.5g. The flint surface has 100% patination with iron staining along the arises. In cross-section the axehead is lentoid and both faces have large flake scars. An areas of cortex is visible on one face only. The breaks at either end are ancient and display patination to a lesser extent than the rest of the surface. Recent plough damage shows a dark grey flint underneath. One face has an area of possible polishing, suggesting…

A fragment of a Mesolithic tranchet axehead or a slightly later Neolithic flaked axehead (not enough survives to be sure). It comprises the butt end (unless it is a narrow cutting end). Measures 35.05x34.92x22.51mm and weighs 23.9g. The axehead fragment is lentoid in cross-section and has large flake scars on both surfaces with some iron staining on the arises. The flint is 100% heavily patinated on all surfaces, including the break which indicates this occurred in ancient times.

A Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead, roughly triangular in shape, expanding from the butt to the cutting edge. It measures 137.08x(max)56.97x(max)33.31mm and weighs 297.54g. The flint is very heavily patinated - it is almost entirely grey-white in colour, with a dark grey flint bleeding in at the butt end (which also has a small patch of cortex on one surface). The entire surface is polished with a few (likely ancient) flake removals on each face. Towards the cutting edge the surface is very highly polished and glassy in appearance. The cutting edge (56.97x1.09mm) is…

An incomplete Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead with convex sides, with damage to the butt end (probably the original end) and one side. It measures 95.46x(max)56.78x(max)28.53mm and weighs 177.74g. The flint is heavily patinated and a greyish-white in colour. On one face, close to the damage, is a patch of cortex that has been polished smooth. Flakes scars close to both edges and on both sides of the cutting edge show variations in the patination, showing damage over a considerable amount of time. Iron staining is also apparent in streaks, particularly on one face. Re…

Neolithic polished axehead of orange flint. The object weighs 148.45g, is 150mm long, has a cutting edge 42mm wide and has a maximum thickness of 20mm. It is compete but slightly damaged. The cutting edge has one large chip, and a section of the butt is missing. Flakes have been removed along the length of the axe. These are mainly shallow, but towards the middle of the body are deeper. It is unclear whether the larger of these are intentional (for example, to improve the hafting) or post-depositional. Around 5% of the surface is covered in a white patina. The axe is faceted and trape…

Early Bronze Age flint barbed and tanged arrowhead (2,500 – 1,500 BC). The arrowhead is complete except for a little damage to the barbs. It is 20.5mm long, 4.1mm thick and has a maximum surviving width across the barbs of 19.3mm. The arrowhead was made on a cortical flake and areas of patination survive on both faces, suggesting that the arrowhead may have been reworked from an earlier tool or debitage. The patinated areas are a pale blue, while the rest of the surface is unpatinated and dark grey. The arrowhead weighs 1.3g.
