Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ten knapped flint flakes. The flakes are knapped from an opaque mid brown or grey coloured flint. Some flakes have developed a mottled blue/grey and white patina. The flakes are both primary and secondary flakes, with the primary flakes have cortex remaining. Each has patches of cortex remaining. The flakes weigh 12.5g. The flakes are probably is prehistoric, dating to the Mesolithic or early Bronze Age periods (-8300 to -1500) when considering the size of the scars on the dorsal surface.

A knapped flint possible arrowhead. The arrowhead is a sub drop shape in plan and has a white patina, and has been burnt forming a crazed surface. The ventral face is slightly convex. There is no obvious bulb of percussion. The edges has small negative scars of re-touch. The centre of this surface has not been flaked. The dorsal surface, in profile is more convex than the dorsal surface. At the apex there is a patch of cortex remaining. The edges has re-touch scars. Three knapped flint flakes. The flakes are trapezoidal and triangular in section. Two have developed a white patina, and the third has a mottled blue/grey patina. Two have recent breaks revealing a dark grey coloured flint. The third is also broken, but the patina covers this break suggesting it was not broken recently. None have cortex remaining. Together they weigh 2.9g. The flakes are likely to be prehistoric dating to the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods ( (c. -3500 to c. -1500).

Two possibly knapped flint flakes or debitage. The debitage both have fire-fractured surfaces, and only one has a large area of cortex remaining. Both have negative flake scars. Together they weigh 15.1g. The flakes are possibly dated to the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods ( (c. -3500 to c. -1500). The fire-fracturing may have occurred recently or in prehistory. If it occurred in prehistory there are different theories way flint was burnt and the resemblance to an arrowhead is accidental. Fire-fractured flint may have been used in cooking, for example to create steam ovens, to be cr…

The flint is of a poor quality with several flaws, which resulted in hinge fracturing. Uncontrolled fractures due to plough roll and movement in the soil has meant that the controlled flake scars are hard to determine. The flake is a light grey to white colour, with orange spots.
