Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible knapped flint core. In section the core is sub-oval and in plan it is a sub pointed-oval. There is no obvious striking platform, and one face appears to be created through recent damage rather than knapping. There is an area on the core which has developed a heavy read/brown patina, and there is also an area of cortex. The remaining flint is a mottled grey/brown colour. The heavy patina perhaps implies the core was re-used at a later date. The surface of the core has mainly vertical negative scars and fewer, smaller obliquely angled ones. The core weighs 31.08g and measures …

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint core knapped from a mottled mid to dark grey flint. In section the core is sub-oval and in plan it is a sub elongated triangle. The upper edge is the striking platform and from here at least five negative scars have been created. The platform itself is also a negative scar with the ripples showing. The core does have one large face of cortex remaining, otherwise the surface is covered with slender vertical negative scarring. The core weighs 6.85g and measures 31.42mm long and 15.64mm wide.
This core probably dates to the Mesolithic period (-8300 to -3500).

Object type: BORER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped flint borer or burin. The tool is knapped from a mid brown opaque flint. In plan it is sub-rectangle with the lower edge having the borer element protruding. This has been created by small flakes being removed either eide, and not re-touch along the edge. A small patch of cortex remains on the flake along the upper edge. It measures 25.71mm long, 13.35mm wide and weighs 1.19g.
The tool probably dates to the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age (-2500 to -1500).

The dorsal surface has negative scarring and the notch has been knapped from this face along the lower edge. The notch is semi-circular in plan. The ventral surface has ripples from striking. The flint is a mottled grey with a matte finish. The flake measures 17.51mm long and 30.34mm wide. It weighs 3.27g.
Butler (Butler, C. 2005 Prehistoric Flintwork Tempus p. 54) comments that notched pieces are found throughout prehistory, but are not a common tool. This flake proba…

The dorsal face (the face with the most scars) has retouch around the side and lower edges, the upper edge forms a flat striking platform. The striking platform has a well developed heavy white patina suggesting the flint has been re-worked. The retouch is formed by long, narrow parallel negative scars. The angle of the retouch is c. 45 degrees. The ventral face (smooth face) has no retouch, but has concentric rings, bulb of percussion and bulbar scars. The scraper, with the striking platform a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable knapped flint scraper, made from a mottled mid brown/grey colour. The scraper is semi-circular in plan, and the rounded edge has re-touch on the dorsal and ventral surface. There is also a small area of re-touch along the straight edge, but this does not appear to be functional. The surface of the scraper has a slightly waxy texture. Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint Neolithic polished axe. The axe has been transversely broken recently at the approximate mid point. The flint has developed a patina on the majority of the axe’s surface, with the exception of the break and a patch of cortex which remains along one side edge of the axe. The flint is a mottled beige/red/brown colour. In plan the axe has almost parallel sides which terminate with an asymmetrical convex blade. The blade edge has two recent chips. The sides of the axe are facetted. The surface of the axe has been polished or ground, leaving a shiny smooth surf…

A possible knapped flint Neolithic blade or fabricator. The flint is a mottled red/brown colour. In plan the blade is an sub elongated pointed oval. The dorsal surface has two linear negative scars with run the length of the blade. Both terminals are slightly rounded, which appears to be due to wear. Both side edges have re-touch, however one edge also shows signs of more recent damage. The ventral surface also has re-touch and flaking which covers more of the surface, particularly at the terminals, compared to the dorsal surface. In section the blade is a sub-triangle. It measures 58.…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible knapped flint Palaeolithic tool or flake. The fragment is knapped from flint which is a mottled light grey/cream colour, but where there is the original surface remaining it has developed a heavy patination, which is a age/brown colour. Only a fragment of the object has this heavy patination, but it is these areas which appear to be negative flake scars. On both scars ripples of percussion are visible. Otherwise the surfaces of the object are caused by recent damage. It weighs 14.15g. The patination, shape of the flake scars and ripples of percussion suggest this was knappe…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable knapped flint serrated blade or denticulate. The blade appears to have been formed from a flake which developed a patina, and the one lateral edge has been re-touched forming notches (denticulations). The flake is an elongated triangle in plan, with the proximal terminal missing. The ventral and dorsal surfaces have developed a light grey/brown coloured patina. However the break at the proximal terminal and the re-touching on the lateral edge of the dorsal surface reveals a mid brown coloured flint. The blade weighs 4.6g.
The blade is probably early Neolithic (-3500 to -…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped secondary flint flake. The flake has a mottled whie/blue patina on the majority of its surface. However on both surfaces there is a distinctive line where the colour of the patina changes to a dark blue/grey colour. Around the edges of the flake there is recentl abrasion which reveals a grey/brown coloured flint. The dorsal surface has small vertical scars, whereas the ventral surface has a small bulb of percussion and concentric rings. The flake weighs 1.2g.
The flake is prehistoric, probably dating to the Mesolithic period (-8300 to -4500) when considering the size of t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable knapped flint scraper, made from a mottled light to mid grey colour. The scraper is sub-oval in plan. The dorsal surface has three large, parallel negative flake scars. The ventral surface has a single negative flake scar which is particular domed in profile. This surface has conchoidal rings, bulb of percussion and the striking platform. However, one edge has small scars where re-touch has occurred to form the scraper. Unusually these scars occur on the dorsal surface but perhaps due to the domed nature of this surface this provides a suitable angle for a scraper. The surfa…
