Upper Palaeolithic to probable Mesolithic (40,000BC-6,500BC) flint bladelet struck from a single platform core. The edges have been retouched but modern crushing damage has prevented further observations. The flint is light brown to mid grey in colour. The bladelet measures 45mm in length, is 20mm wide and 3mm in thickness.

The broken tip from a large flint 'long blade' implement. The flint is pale grey-blue in colour. The artefact has been provisionally dated to the final upper palaeolithic period (40,000 - 8,300 BC) although based on the tip of the blade alone this cannot be confirmed. The artefact measures 33.84mm long by 17.62mm wide, is 3.55mm thick and weighs 2.16g.

Undiagnostic struck flint flakes often referred to as debitage. These finds represent waste flakes created during the knapping process and none could be dated with any degree of confidence although the suggestion was made that the white flint flake (top left in the photograph) is typical of the palaeolithic period. The overall weight of this group is 47.20g and comprises of 9 individual pieces.

A Prehistoric worked flint flake (500,000 - 1,500BC). Dark grey/ brown flint with no patina. This is a primary flake with approximately 45% cortex remaining. There is a small area of retouch (length: 15.77mm), on the ventral surface on one side. Also there is some modern damage that has removed the butt and some of the cortex. The appearance of the flake is very 'fresh' with excellent preservation of the retouch. Dimensions: length: 37.26mm; width: 51.35mm; thickness: 6.41mm; weight: 12.49g.

A Prehistoric flint ‘pounder’ (500,000 – 800BC). This is a flint nodule where two flakes were removed to create the platform. From this platform several small flakes have been removed at a steep angle. The flint is not good quality. Around the edges there is damage caused by using the tool to strike something repeatedly. This is human use rather than accidental damage. Approximately 80% of the cortex remaining. Dark grey flint with some opaque patination. Dimensions: length: 118.01mm; width: 73.83mm; thickness: 62.73mm; weight: 533g.

A Lower Palaeolithic flint cordate handaxe. It has a trimmed butt, rounded point and a straight edge. Wymer Type J. Evidence from the Lower Thames Valley suggests this type belongs to the later part of the Middle Acheulian Culture (Wymer 1968:56-57). There is a small area of cortex present on one side and the other side has a milky patina. Weight: 400g approx., Length: 161mm

A patinated and iron stained flint blade, probably dating to the later stages of the Upper Palaeolithic (c. 40,000 BC - 8,300 BC). The blade has a plain platform from where it was struck from the core, and a diffuse bulb. The blade is slightly curved and retains some cortex on the distal end of the dorsal surface. Retouching is evident along both left and right dorsal edges, however there is also modern machine damage evident to both side and the central ridge is crushed. There is also some crushing to the right hand side of the tip. The Late or Final Upper Palaeolithic period dated f…

Paleolithic to Neolithc flint core. Mottled grey-white on one side but in general has a orange-brown patina. Irregular shape. Bifacial flaking. Two parallel blade scars on one end and one on the reverse. At the other end and to the side is another blade scar. Two striking platform. Several removals for rejuvenation. Likely dates to the Paleolithic. Larget flakes early with smaller later removals.

A fragment of a lower Palaeolithic flint ficron handaxe dating to 800,000 - 250,000 BC. The fragment is trapezoidal in plan, and lozenge-shaped in cross-section. Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. The sides of the fragment have short, scaled, low angled retouch. The distal end has an old break and a width of 28.3mm. The fragment then tapers outwards towards a wider butt which also has an old break with a width of 39.3mm. Both ends are lozenge-shaped in cross-section and are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. Both faces have a concave profile …

A lower Palaeolithic flake dating to 800,000 - 250,000 BC, possibly Clactonian. The flake is sub-rectangular in shape and has a crested cross-section. This is a primary flake where the whole of the dorsal and ventral face are covered by a smooth light brown cortex with a rougher beige patina in some areas. There is short, scaled low angled retouch on both faces at the distal end, and in one corner of proximal end. The sides of the flake have short, stepped low angled retouch. Where there is retouch the cortex has been chipped away and has a light greyish brown patina, apart from on…

An incomplete lower Palaeolithic flint sub-cordate handaxe dating to c.300,000 - 200,000 BC. The handaxe is ovoid in plan and pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces have invasive, semi-abrupt, scaled retouch. Around the sides of the whole handaxe there are short, stepped, low angled retouch. On one face at the wide rounded butt there are angled jagged breaks which are patinated with multi shades of grey and white patches. Due to this break and the fact that it is bifacially worked, it is difficult to determine the dorsal and ventral face. The rest of the flint has a light brown …

A fairly small flint Acheulian handaxe of a white-grey flint dating to the Lower Palaeolithic. It is broadly cordate in shape, but with a flattened tip. The object has a regular profile, more raised on one surface compared to the other. It is covered by removals with the exception of a strip of cortex running up the centre of the butt of the higher surface. There is a small patch of cortex in addition on the other surface, off centre, towards the butt. The butt itself is somewhat flattened. The removals are fairly crisp suggesting that this is not a glacial deposit. The handaxe is dar…
