Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: The City of Brighton and Hove
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age flint knife or possibly scraper made on a secondary flake. It is oval in shape with a slight point at the distal end which is damaged from a modern chip. This modern chip shows the flint is dark grey although the surface is covered by a white patina. There is part of the bulb of percussion and ripples on the ventral face although the striking platform and edge of the bulb has been lost to retouch and chipping. The dorsal face is covered in cortex apart from the edge which has medium length semi-parallel and scalar retouch around both edges and ends …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: The City of Brighton and Hove
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possibly naturally formed flake with evidence of retouch around parts of the outer edge. The flake has small areas of natural cortex on the edges. One side is orange with a patina associated with glacial and water weathering, similar to that seen on Paleolithic material. The other side does not have a clear bulb of percussion or ripples and may be a natural 'pot lid' fracture. However at two places around the edge are areas of short semi abrupt scalar retouch suggesting it was reworked for casual tool use. It is 38.4mm by 37.8mm by 6.0mm thick and weighs 10.24 grams. It is hard to date…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: The City of Brighton and Hove
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two flint flakes in mid to pale grey flint with white re-formed cortex. 1. Roughly rectangular, crudely struck off a large platform. Bulb of percussion and percussion waves, two parallel arises from previous removals on the slightly concave dorsal face. The original cortex remains down the left edge (of the ventral face). The distal end and right edge have numerous chips but these are not obviously retouch and may be later damage. 43.4mm long, 38.4mm wide, 12.7mm thick and weighs 19.60 grams. 2. Irregular outlined, thinner flake. Prominent bulb of percussion on ventra…

Object type: CHOPPER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: The City of Brighton and Hove
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint tool possibly a chopper, mesolithic-Neolithic in date. The tool is a lozenge shaped flake the ventral side has some small removals that may be later as they break the patinated surface of the object. The dorsal side has three longitudinal flake scars from previous removals with only a small bit of cortex remaining at the distal end. The whole surface has become patinated to a pale grey-white colour except where some later flakes have broken the surface, possibly from natural damage. At the distal end there is some evidence of retouch around the broadest point. L…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: The City of Brighton and Hove
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 2500 BC - c.1150 BC). The arrowhead is bifacially worked and triangular in plan, with two notches in the base, between a central tang and a barb at either side. One barb has been lost to an old break and the other is small and triangular and may have lost its tip. The tang is triangular and relatively large. The tip is also lost to an old break. The arrowhead has invasive shallow scaler retouch on both faces. The flint is pale grey where it is visible in a modern chip, it has develop…
