Record ID: WMID-F7B580
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A largely complete disc scraper, fabricated from a broad, squat flint flake, probably from the later neolithic or early bronze age. In plan the scraper is broadly circular, with a flat striking platform at the proximal end. In profile, the scraper has two convex sides which meet at the distal end, with the flat striking platform at the proximal end. The convex ventral face is formed by a bulb of percussion with a bulbar scar at the proximal end, and gentle ripples of the conchoidal fracture visible towards the distal end. There are some fractures on the perimeter of the ventral face, b…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint long bladed and backed knife, probably dating from the Mesolithic – Late Neolithic period, between 8000 – 2200 BC (length: 93mm; width: 22mm; thickness: 9mm; weight: 20.71g). The artefact has faintly visible ripples or ‘lunettes’ down its length on the ventral side, although the bulb of percussion and additional scars are not present. On the dorsal side of the knife, there is one main and central arrise with some retouch at the top left edge. There is extensive and multiple retouch down the right side edge, which continues down to the tip, where r…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint flake with probable retouch. Possibly Neolithic - Iron Age. Mass: 12.6g; length: 56mm, width: 24mm; thickness: 12mm. Brown and off-white flint. There is a conchoidal fracture radiating from a point towards the distal end of the ventral face - possibly a weak point at which the flint fractured. An aris runs down the centre of the dorsal face. There is probable retouch at the distal end, on the tip and on the prjection on one edge of the of the ventral face, and also at the proximal end. There are other scars which represent damage from the time the flake spent in the ground.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Snapped knapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or earlier Neolithic date (4500 – 3500 BC). The flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The ventral (reverse) face has a distinct bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures; a slight striking platform is present on the heel of the flake. The dorsal face show several flake scars. There is a little abrupt retouch to the long edges on the dorsal face, although this could easily be caused in the ploughzone through tumble. The flint is a mid greyish brown colour with a series of flaws and different co…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An early Neolithic flint leaf shaped arrowhead. The arrowhead is of ogival type, with a rounded butt which tapers to a point. The arrowhead is convex, with a rounded dorsal face and a flat ventral face. Retouch has been applied to both faces of the arrowhead, although only partially, and the retouch does not cover the whole of the surface of the arrowhead as seen on the most elaborately worked examples. The arrowhead is now quite worn and the edges are not as sharp as they would once have been. The flint has a pale grey to cream patina. The piece measures 38.03 mm in length, 15.5 mm wi…
