Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint flake. Length 29.1mm; width: 18.5mm; thickness: 5.9mm; mass: 2.9g. The blade is non-cortical and grey in colour. The blade has convex sides which run from a narrow proximal end to the wider broken base at the distal end. On the ventral face of the scarred (?retouch) narrow proximal end there is a bulb of percussion, with pronounced ripples of the concoidal fracture below this. One edge of the blade has some small scars on both dorsal and ventral faces, creating a mildly serrated edge. The other edge is a scarred ridge with a slight notch in it. The blade is likely to b…

A prehistoric knapped flake, probably of Neolithic or early Bronze Age in date. The flint has a clear bulb of percussion at the proximal end as well as a striking platform. There are also negative scars on the dorsal surface where other flakes have been removed. Possibly very fine retouch is visible on the left edge, although this may have been caused by abrasion. The tip has been broken off, and judging by the even patina on the flake this seems to have occurred some time ago, although whether this occurred in prehistory is difficult to determine. The flint is a mottled ochre brown i…

A worked flint flake of prehistoric date. The flake has a clear bulb of percussion and striking plaform at the proximal end as well as a bulbar scar on the ventral face. The flake exhibits what may possibly be retouch on both left and right edges, although there is a strong possibility that this 'retouch' is the result of accidental damage caused during use of the flake as a cutting tool or even after deposition. This is suggested by its slightly irregular spacing with only small areas of both sides exhibiting retouch, along with a lack of any clear functional reason for the applicato…

Flint flake with probable retouch. Possibly Neolithic - Iron Age. Mass: 12.6g; length: 56mm, width: 24mm; thickness: 12mm. Brown and off-white flint. There is a conchoidal fracture radiating from a point towards the distal end of the ventral face - possibly a weak point at which the flint fractured. An aris runs down the centre of the dorsal face. There is probable retouch at the distal end, on the tip and on the prjection on one edge of the of the ventral face, and also at the proximal end. There are other scars which represent damage from the time the flake spent in the ground.

A complete knapped flint miscellaneous retouched flake with a notch on the right side, probably dating to the Late Bronze Age, between 1150 – 800 BC (length: 27mm; width: 19mm; thickness: 4mm; weight: 2.3g). On the ventral side of the artefact, there is a bulb of percussion, with radial scars extending outwards from an incomplete eraillure scar, as well as multiple radiating ripples or ‘lunettes’ below and running down the length of the flake towards the distal end. On the dorsal side, there are two arrises with small amounts of retouch on the left side. As mentioned above, t…

A complete knapped flint flake, dating to the Neolithic period, between 4000 – 2200 BC (length: 41.5mm; width: 18mm; thickness: 7mm; weight: 4.6g). On the ventral side of the flake, a slight bulb of percussion remains with an eraillure scar. No radiating ripples or ‘lunettes’ remain. On the dorsal side, there are multiple arrises (three or four) running down the length of the artefact with some infrequent retouched areas down the left side. A flake, according to Bond, C, J, 2004 ‘Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics, Version 1’, page 202, is an…

A Neolithic flint flake, dating from 4000-2200 BC (length: 27.5mm; width: 27.5mm; thickness: 4mm; weight: 3.93g). The striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly visible, as is a eraillure scar running partly down the length of the flake by 10mm. Numerous slight radiatting ripples or 'lunettes' also appear down the length of the flake. Pressure flaking on the ventral side has produced flaking scars around most of the dorsal's edges, apart from at the very top near the striking platform. There is a single slight arrise to the left on the dorsal side. Overall, the flake is …

A Neolithic flint flake with re-touch, dating from 4000-2200 BC (length: 25mm; width: 28.5mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 7.03g). The bulb of percussion is missing from the ventral side as the flint appears to be broken (as it also seems to be at the opposite end). However, there are still numerous radiatting ribbles or 'lunettes' running down the flint's length, therefore indicating where the bulb would have been. There are flaking scars down the left side of the ventral. Pressure flaking on the ventral created numerous flaking scars on the left side working edge of the dorsal. Ther…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date and probably a waste flake struck during the knapping process, subsequently used as a cutting blade. The flake has a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar at the proximal end. Cortex remains at the distal end and it is possible this was deliberately left to facilitate comfortable handling, allowing the left lateral edge to be used for cutting. This edge has some damage, perhaps from use. The flint has a dark grey colour with white/grey inclusions. The cortex is a pale ochre in colour. Find not photographed.

A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date, perhaps used as a cutting blade. The bulb of percussion and bulbar scar are clearly visible on the ventral face at the proximal end. A ridge runs down the centre of the dorsal face, making the flint triangular in section. The tip is missing and there appears to be some retouch, particularly down the right lateral edge, perhaps to facilitate hafting. The flint is a dark grey colour with cream to white speckled inclusions. Find not photographed.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake does not appear to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. The flake is not of a good quality flint and has inconsistencies including an area of cortex. This is perhaps why it was not selected for further adaption. It is a pale grey to white in colour with an area of pale brown cortex. Find not photographed.

A knapped flint flake of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake appears to have some retouch along both lateral edges, perhaps to form scraping edges. It has a clear bulb of percussion and bulbar scar on the ventral face at the proximal end. There are several negative scars from previous flake removal on the dorsal face. The flint is of a mottled grey colour. The tool looks as though it may have been snapped and as the break has a similar patina to the rest of the flint it seems likely that this is an ancient break rather than recent damage. Find not photographed.
