Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint or chert scraper. The flint or chert is a mid red/brown colour with red/beige patches. In plan it is a sub-drop shape. The dorsal face (the face with the most scars) has retouch around the side and lower edges, the base of the drop shape. The retouch is formed by long, narrow parallel negative scars. The angle of the retouch is c. 60 degrees. The ventral face (smooth face) has no retouch, but has bulbar scars as well as the bulb and concentric rings. The scraper, with the striking platform at the top, is 36.98mm long and is 28.64mm wide. It weighs 10.6g. The scraper…

A flint thumbnail scraper, probably dating from the late neolithic or early bronze age periods. Length 16.6mm; width: 17.9mm; thickness: 8.0mm; mass: 2.7g. The scraper is formed on a secondary grey coloured flint flake, with approximately 25% cortex remaining on the proximal end of the dorsal side. There is invasive retouch on the dorsal side, with the retouched edge stretching around much of the circumference, excluding the cortex covered proximal end. On the ventral face there is a diffuse bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture. There is also a sub-triangular n…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic (3500BC-2100BC). Mass: 8.7g; length: 50.8mm; width: 18.2mm; thickness: 12.4mm. Approximately 25% cortex on the dorsal face, with an arris and unidirectional negative flake scars towards the sub-triangular sectioned proximal end. The distal end has a sub-D-shaped-cross section. The tool has retouch on both edges, particularly on the more convex edge of the dorsal face. The tool may have functioned as a piercer, and its retouched sides may have been utilised for cutting and scraping.

Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic. Light grey/off-white flint. Mass: 3.2g; length: 35.3mm; width: 22.1mm; thickness: 4.6mm. Ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Arrises and unidirectional flake/blade scars on the dorsal face, with retouch on all edges except the proximal end. There is a notch on one edge and the distal end narrows to a ?slightly incomplete tip, suggesting that the tool may have functioned as a notched scraper and piercer.
