Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic (3500BC-2100BC). Mass: 8.7g; length: 50.8mm; width: 18.2mm; thickness: 12.4mm. Approximately 25% cortex on the dorsal face, with an arris and unidirectional negative flake scars towards the sub-triangular sectioned proximal end. The distal end has a sub-D-shaped-cross section. The tool has retouch on both edges, particularly on the more convex edge of the dorsal face. The tool may have functioned as a piercer, and its retouched sides may have been utilised for cutting and scraping.

Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic. Light grey/off-white flint. Mass: 3.2g; length: 35.3mm; width: 22.1mm; thickness: 4.6mm. Ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Arrises and unidirectional flake/blade scars on the dorsal face, with retouch on all edges except the proximal end. There is a notch on one edge and the distal end narrows to a ?slightly incomplete tip, suggesting that the tool may have functioned as a notched scraper and piercer.

Knapped flint scraper on a flake. Probably Neolithic (3500 BC- 2100BC). Mass: 9.0g; length: 25.9mm; width: 26.5mm; thickness: 13.2mm. Grey flint. Bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Dorsal face is approximately 10% cortical, with negative flake scars with abrupt/semi-abrupt retouch around the edge other than at the proximal end.

Knapped flint scraper on a flake. Probably Neolithic (3500BC-2100BC). Mass: 6.1g; length: 23.2mm; width: 24.4mm; thickness: 11.5mm. Grey flint. Scarred bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Dorsal face is approximately 50% cortical, with negative flake scars with semi-abrupt retouch around the concave non-cortical edge.

Knapped flint scraper on a re-used flake. Probably Neolithic or Bronze Age. Mass: 4.6g; length: 23.4mm; width: 22.2mm; thickness: 9.3mm. Ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Dorsal face is approximately 50% cortical, with semi-abrupt retouch around the edge. Brown flint is patinated other than on the retouched edges indicating that this was a re-used flake.

A flint flake, with retouch on the distal end, possibly dating from the neolithic period (3500 BC to 2100 BC). The function of the tool is uncertain. This is a secondary flake, with approximately 10% cortex on the dorsal surface. At the proximal end is the striking platform. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion, and ripples of the conchoidal fracture run down the surface. Ripples on the dorsal surface are broadly unidirectional. Viewed in plan, the distal end is uneven. There is a projection to one side, with retouch on both sides of the distal edge (low angle of retouch,…

A retouched flint flake of probable Neolithic date. The flake is sub-trapezoidal in shape and appears to be broken, missing its proximal end. It has been retouched using pressure flaking on the left lateral edge, and was possibly used as a cutting blade. The flint is a pale cream in colour. It measures 15.4 mm long, 24.65 mm wide, 2.7 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams.
