Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small flint scraper / side scraper formed on a secondary flake probably dating from the earlier Neolithic (3500-2500 BC). The scraper is formed on a pointed oval shaped flake which is D shaped in cross section. The ventral (lower) face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb and point of percussion from a prepared distal platform. The dorsal face has a number of irregular and regular flake scars from previous flake removals and a large area of mid grey cream coloured cortex. The two long curved edges have been reworked / retouched with small regular flakes creating a cutting / scrapin…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete retouched bladelet of later Mesolithic date, circa 4500-3000BC. The blade was struck from a prepared core and if it had not been reworked would be best described as secondary debitage
The flint is broadly triangular in plan and 'D' shaped in cross section. Approximately 50 % of the dorsal face is covered in a mid grey coloured chalk / limestone derived cortex. A striking platform and shallow bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. One parallel sided blade removal is present on the dorsal face, suggesting that the core was relatively unworked when this blade wa…

A complete tertiary debitage flake of probable Neolithic dating (4000 BC to 2350 BC).
It has been struck from a prepared core, when reducing down a nodule to form a core tool. There is retouch to the ventral face along one edge (short, abrupt, parallel). Probably made for a specific task and then discarded.
It measures 32.6 mm in length, a maximum width of 21.2 mm and is 9.2 mm thick. It weighs 5.3 g.
The flint is a mid to dark brown colour, with little surface patination.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint scraper of probable later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2700-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval to D-shaped, and probably knapped from a secondary flake. The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a series of flake scars on the right hand side suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is curved and smooth. The areas of retouch extend around 70% of the outer edges and are short, scaled and semi-abrupt. The scraper has been formed from a dark grey coloured flint.
The scraper measures 22.4 mm in length, 15.5 mm in width, a…

An incomplete retouched tertiary flint blade of later Mesolithic date, circa 4500-3000 BC.
The implement is a blade formed from a tertiary flake which has a D-shaped section. The blade has snapped at the proximal end, therefore the bulb of percussion is lost although the conchoidal ripples are visible. A number of small parallel flakes have been removed from the dorsal face. The retouch on the implement is short, parallel, low angled and is present along the left edge towards the distal end. It is likely that this blade was retouched around the long edges to be used as a scraping and …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period, probably dating from c. 2400 BC - c. 1600 BC.
The object is probably a secondary flake removed from a larger core, and then subjected to further working, and was probably used as a scraper tool.
The object is broadly D shaped in plan and broadly triangular in section. On the ventral face the striking platform is evident at the base of the proximal end, there is a small bulb of percussion and shallow, but clear, conchoidal ripple marks on the surface, suggestive of the use of a soft hammer when strik…

The dorsal surface contains three predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises. The left hand side of the dorsal surface contains a small number of short, parallel removals done at a semi-abrupt angle. The distal end appears to have been abruptly blunted with a worked point for boring. There is also some retouch below the borer with the removals also short, parallel and done at a semi-abrupt angle. The ventral surface is convex with ripp…
