Object type: BURIN
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric worked flint tool. The tool has been made from a knapped blade which measures 49.29 mm long, 19.5 mm wide and 6.63 mm thick. It weighs 6.4 grams). It is sub-triangular in section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly visible at the proximal end. The blade has been retouched on both lateral edges and at the distal end. The distal end terminates in a point and the right lateral edge projects down from the point at a diagonal angle of approximately 300 degrees. This angular section has been retouched and may have resulted from the removal of a spall in o…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Neolithic (Early) to Neolithic (Late) disc scraper, 33mm long, 33mm wide, 5mm thick and 9.3g in weight. Made on a rounded flake that has been worked centripetally into a disc by the application of semi-abrupt and in some parts abrupt retouch. The flint is opaque and has turned light grey through the process of patination. The butt is large and therefore the piece has been hard hammer struck. The left side has been notched, and the dorsal face possesses two parallel ridges created by unidirectional removals.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Mesolithic to Neolithic (-8300 to -2100) debitage: The knapped flint flake is probably either a core rejuvenation flake or sharpening flake. It is knapped from a mottled mid grey to light grey flint which has a waxy texture. One edge has re-touch on the dorsal surface which also has flake scars. The edges are otherwise unmodified. The ventral surface has a single scar, and recent damage. It weighs 7.25g and measures 35.94mm long, 28.09mm wide and 7.91mm thick. The flake probably dates to the Mesolithic to Neolithic period.

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age or Beaker Period (c. 2400-1500 BC). This arrowhead has been knapped from a dark grey-black piece of flint and there is no cortex remaining. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It is broadly symmetrical in shape, with two notches chipped into the base of the flint to separate the barbs and the tang, both barbs are still intact. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been precisely retouched to create sharp edges. There is a small chip on one edge of the arrowhead. The object is bif…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete tertiary debitage flake of probable Neolithic dating (4000 BC to 2350 BC). It has been struck from a prepared core, when reducing down a nodule to form a core tool. It is blade like in form. There is retouch to the ventral face along one edge (short, abrupt, parallel). Probably made for a specific task and then discarded. It measures 25.5 mm in length, a maximum width of 17.8 mm and is 3.9 mm thick. It weighs 15.0 g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint hollow scraper, of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age dating (3300 BC to 1000 BC). The scraper is irregular in shape, with a triangular cross section. It consists of a wider end, which then narrows to a thinner square end. A deliberate circular notch has been taken out of one side, with abrupt, short, acute retouch around it and along the edge below it. A small amount of cortex is present at the wide end. It measures 40.7 mm in length, a maximum width of 15.3 mm and 6.1 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g. The flint is a mid to dark grey colour, with little…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped or flaked flint leaf shaped arrowhead, of Neolithic dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2500 BC). The arrowhead is approximately 95% complete, missing a small fragment from the bottom. The arrowhead is leaf shaped in plan, consisting of a pointed oval shape.. It has been made from a piece of tertiary debitage as no cortex (outer rind) is visible on either the dorsal (upper) and ventral (lower) faces. Both dorsal and ventral face exhibit controlled flaking. The ventral face just has the retouch along the edge, whereas on the dorsal face, it covers the surface. The retouch…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked flint tool of Neolithic date, formed from a blade. The tool is perhaps either a knife or an unfinished leaf shaped arrowhead. It has invasive retouch on the dorsal face but not on the ventral face. The striking platform, bulbar scar and bulb of perussion are still intact at the proximal end. It is likely that these would have been removed and that both surfaces would have been subjected to invasive retouch if it were a complete arrowhead. There is an area of cortex at the distal end of the flint which perhaps rendered it unsuitable for further working and, if an arrowhead, it…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date and probably a waste flake struck during the knapping process, subsequently used as a cutting blade. The flake has a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar at the proximal end. Cortex remains at the distal end and it is possible this was deliberately left to facilitate comfortable handling, allowing the left lateral edge to be used for cutting. This edge has some damage, perhaps from use. The flint has a dark grey colour with white/grey inclusions. The cortex is a pale ochre in colour. Find not photographed.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date, perhaps used as a cutting blade. The bulb of percussion and bulbar scar are clearly visible on the ventral face at the proximal end. A ridge runs down the centre of the dorsal face, making the flint triangular in section. The tip is missing and there appears to be some retouch, particularly down the right lateral edge, perhaps to facilitate hafting. The flint is a dark grey colour with cream to white speckled inclusions. Find not photographed.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric worked flint scraper of probable Neolithic date. The tool is clearly broken although the fairly uniform patina at the break may suggest this is an ancient rather than recent break. The dorsal face of the flint has had extensive invasive retouch applied. There is an area of cortex in the centre of the dorsal face. The reverse has clear ripples formed by the percussive blow used to strike the flint from the core. The flint is a dark grey colour with an area of pale cream/pale grey cortex on the dorsal face. It is lozenge shaped in section. Find not photographed.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete prehistoric worked flint, possibly a Neolithic or early Bronze Age arrowhead. As the flint object is clearly broken it is difficult to determine for certain what it may once have functioned as. Invasive retouch applied to the dorsal face may suggest an arrowhead although as the ventral face is not retouched and the object is incomplete this is difficult to say for certain. The apparent shape of a tang may in fact be coincidence. The flint is a light to dark grey in colour. Find not photographed.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of prehistoric date, probably Neolithic. The tool has a clear bulb of percussion and bulbar scar from having been knapped from a core. A projection at the distal end of the flake may possibly have allowed it to be used as a borer or a piercer. The flint is a pale grey in colour. Find not photographed.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake does not appear to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. The flake is not of a good quality flint and has inconsistencies including an area of cortex. This is perhaps why it was not selected for further adaption. It is a pale grey to white in colour with an area of pale brown cortex. Find not photographed.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint flake of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake appears to have some retouch along both lateral edges, perhaps to form scraping edges. It has a clear bulb of percussion and bulbar scar on the ventral face at the proximal end. There are several negative scars from previous flake removal on the dorsal face. The flint is of a mottled grey colour. The tool looks as though it may have been snapped and as the break has a similar patina to the rest of the flint it seems likely that this is an ancient break rather than recent damage. Find not photographed.

County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint side scraper of probable Neolithic date. The flint also has an apparent burin spall removal at the distal end with a burin point formed, probably for boring or incising. The tool therefore may had a double function as a burin and a scraper. The left lateral edge has been retouched, probably to form a scraping edge. A small portion of pale cream coloured cortex has been retained at the distal end of the dorsal face, probably to allow the flint to be handled comfortably. The proximal end retains the bulb of percussion. The flint is a dark mottled grey in colour. The flin…
