Object type: PLANO CONVEX KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete flint plano-convex knife of Early Bronze Age dating (c. 2350 BC to c. 1400 BC).
Around 50% of the knife is present, the rest is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The knife is of a sub pointed oval shape, with a flattened end. It has a D shaped cross section.
It is a mid grey colour, with minimal surface patination. It has been made from a piece of tertiary debitage.
Retouch is present along both edges on the dorsal surface. A probable shouldered notch is present at the top of the knife, with retouch on the ventral side. The retouch can be classified as: short / …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint miscellaneous retouched flake with a notch on the right side, probably dating to the Late Bronze Age, between 1150 – 800 BC (length: 27mm; width: 19mm; thickness: 4mm; weight: 2.3g).
On the ventral side of the artefact, there is a bulb of percussion, with radial scars extending outwards from an incomplete eraillure scar, as well as multiple radiating ripples or ‘lunettes’ below and running down the length of the flake towards the distal end. On the dorsal side, there are two arrises with small amounts of retouch on the left side. As mentioned above, t…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead (length: 38mm; width: 29mm; thickness: 4mm; weight: 3.67g). A finely knapped artefact (particularly along the edges) forming a sharply pointed tip as well as particularly square barbs and the base of the arrowhead is convex in plan. The barbs are slightly shorter than the tang and angle upwards to the right on the outside edge. This arrowhead has clear parallels with those of the Conygar Hill types which are present through-out Britain (Stephen Green, 1980, pages 117, 123 & 127, figs 46 & 50). The barbed and tanged arrowheads are largely dated to th…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age or Beaker Period (c. 2400-1500 BC).
This arrowhead has been knapped from a dark grey-black piece of flint and there is no cortex remaining. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It is broadly symmetrical in shape, with two notches chipped into the base of the flint to separate the barbs and the tang, both barbs are still intact. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been precisely retouched to create sharp edges. There is a small chip on one edge of the arrowhead. The object is bif…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint, Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age, tanged arrowhead, 2350-1700BC. The object comprises a pointed oval blade that has been pressure flaked to shape. There are long, scaled, intrusive removals across the surface of the object to shape the piece. The cutting edges are then retouched by short, scaled removals. The piece has an assymetrical lozenge shaped cross section, with one face more triangular than the other.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint working debitage of probably the mid to late Bronze Age period, dating from c. 1600 - c. 800 BC.
The object is probably an implement formed of a tertiary flake removed from a larger core, and then subjected to further working. The object is broadly square in plan and a tapered D shape in section. The left side of the dorsal face has a rectangular removal which has conchoidal ripple marks from the proximal end. There is a triangular removal above this with conchoidal ripple marks from the distal end. To the right of these is a triangular removal with shallow ripple marks from …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period, probably dating from c. 2400 BC - c. 1600 BC.
The object is probably a secondary flake removed from a larger core, and then subjected to further working, and was probably used as a scraper tool.
The object is broadly D shaped in plan and broadly triangular in section. On the ventral face the striking platform is evident at the base of the proximal end, there is a small bulb of percussion and shallow, but clear, conchoidal ripple marks on the surface, suggestive of the use of a soft hammer when strik…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete probable Bronze Age flint scraper (c. 3500 BC - 800 BC). This implement is made on a primary flake. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are apparent on the ventral face. A small number of bulb scars are also visible. The dorsal face is partially covered with a light brown cortex. There are signs of retouching arlong the distal and medial edges. The removals are mainly long, scaled and low angled.
The overall dimensions are as follows: 30.07mm in length, 20.75mm in width, 13mm in thickness and 8.63g in weight.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete thumbnail scraper of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age dating (2700 BC to 1600 BC).
The scraper has been made from a dark brown flint. No cortex is present. The scraper is sub circular in shape, with a triangular cross section. The dorsal (upper) surface exhibits controlled working, with minimal retouch (long, scaled, abrupt) along the working edge. The ventral (lower) surface exhibits a bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples.
It measures 15.0 mm in length, 19.0 mm wide and 5.4 mm thick. It weighs 1.6 g.

County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete flint scraper dating from Late Neolithic to Bronze Age. In plan the scraper is largely rectangular save for one rounded edge which is found on the left when facing the ventral side. The opposite edge is predominantly straight. In section, the tool curves slightly towards the dorsal face, and narrows in thickness towards the distal end. The thickest point is at the bulb of percussion. The scraper is a white/light grey patina and warm in tone, with no cortex visible. On the dorsal side there are areas of flake removal but there is limited evidence of retouching. At the pr…
