Object type: BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An exceptionally large flint blade of possible late (upper) Palaeolithic or more probable early Mesolithic date (12000 -6500 BC) or early Neolithic date (3500-2300 BC). The blade is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and triangular(crested) in cross section. The prepared striking platform is present as is the keeled bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal face shows a number of vertical flake scars (ridges / crests) formed by the removal of other flakes from a large prepared core prior to the creation of this blade - all these removals have been caused by blades being taken i…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or probably early Neolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The blade has been snapped and only the upper part survives; this break is intentional and of the period of use. The bulb of percussion is present on the lower (ventral) face as is a prepared knapping platform on the upper (proximal) edge. The snapped edge is smooth and rounded suggesting polishing. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of c…

A complete secondary debitage flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The upper face has an area of cotex present suggesting it was derived from a chalk environment. The bulb of percussion is present on the lower (ventral) face although it has been trimmed and knapped removing the prepared knapping platform on the upper (proximal) edge. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. The long edges are both retouched on both the ventral and dors…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A side and end scraper formed on a flake of secondary debitage of Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). 50% of the dorsal face is covered with chalk derived weathered cortex and the flint is a dark grey colour. The ventral face shows a clear bulb and point of percussion - this is positioned at 90 degrees to that of the working on the dorsal face. Here the edge is retouched with short scaled semi-abrupt retouch - applied mostly to the dorsal face. This form of reuse of waste flakes is common on flints discovered in the Welsh Marches.
The flake measures 34.1mm length, 19.5mm width, is 5.2…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The remains of a thumbnail scraper formed on a flake of secondary debitage of Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). 10% of the dorsal face is covered with chalk derived weathered cortex and the flint is a dark grey colour. The ventral face shows a clear bulb and point of percussion. The flint has been smashed by modern agricultural practices. All that remains on the dorsal face is evidence of steep scaled abrupt retouch. All other original edges have been lost. This form of reuse of waste flakes is common on flints discovered in the Welsh Marches.
The scraper measures 31.7mm length,…

Object type: DISCOIDAL KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete fragment from a polished flint discoidal knife of later Neolithic date (3000 - 2000 BC). The implement is broadly triangular in shape and lentoid in cross section. There is some uncertainty as to whether the artefact is complete having, it seems, been reworked from its original size in antiquity. The flint is a mid grey colour with mid white coloured inclusions. The knife has been bi-facially worked with invasive (almost covering ) scaled low angled flake removals. A distinct patch of cortex is present on the dorsal face. One edge has been polished with two distinct fac…

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A struck flint 'thumbnail' scraper of Neolithic date (3500-2000 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from on a relatively thick tertiary flake of mid-grey / cream coloured flint; it is irregular in cross section. The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is relatively flat with conchoidal ripples and the remains of the bulb of percussion. The striking platform has been reworked. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouched with indirect percussion,…

A thumbnail scraper of early to middle Neolithic date circa 4000 - 3500BC. The scraper is formed on a cream coloured tertiary flake of flint. The scraper is sub-triangular in plan, with a pointed distal end and rounded proximal end. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets and the retouch is best described as being invasive, scaled and semi-abrupt. Less retouch has been applied to the edges on the ventral face which are mainly concentrated along two sides. The retouch on the ventral face is long, scaled and semi-abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool f…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of Early Bronze Age dating (c. 2500 BC to c. 1500 BC).
Approximately 95% of the arrowhead is present, with the tang and tip being incomplete.
The arrowhead has been knapped from a dark grey coloured piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in shape and lentoid in cross section. The tang is incomplete and the surviving barbs are sub triangular. The arrowhead has been knapped using both direct and indirect percussion techniques. Both long sides / edges of the arrowhead have been finely retouched to create sharp edges. The retouch…

A near complete secondary debitage flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The upper face has an area of cortex present suggesting it is from the outer area of a flint core which was originally derived from a chalk environment. The bulb of percussion is present on the lower (ventral) face . The proximal end is flat having been deliberately trimmed suggesting the blade was struck from a well prepared core. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridge…

A complete flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face and the distal end has signs of being struck from a prepared platform. The long edges have received some reworking with neat short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch, although some of this has been removed by abrasion damage in the ploughsoil. It is likely that this blade was used as a scraping and cutting tool. The flint is a mid grey colour with a milky white coloured inclusions.…

An incomplete flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are lost due to the blade being broken into segments. The broken edge is unpatinated and may be evidence of recent damage. The long edges have been reworked with limited neat short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch. The tip of the blade has a series of transverse flakes scars / ridges caused by blade removals suggesting that the core from which the blade was taken had been worked in multiple directions. Th…
