Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint scraper of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The flake measures 48.8mm length, 37.9mm width, is 12.3mm thick and weighs 22 grams. The bulb of percussion on the reverse of the flake is complete and there is evidence of a number of hinge fractures on the opposite (front) surface. It is likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making as there is a small amount of cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) on the artefact. This area cortex covers less than 15% of the tota…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-triangular in plan and cross section. It is much thicker than most blades and the two long edges taper to a blunted point. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the upper and ventral (lower) face. The lower (pointed) end of the two long sides have been retouched / reworked, however this is partially distorted by modern plough-roll / abrasion. The retouch is most extensive on one edge where both pressure and direct knapping have been used. The flint is a mid gre…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small irregular shaped piece of tertiary debitage / waste flake of probably later Mesolithic or early Neolithic date(4000 BC - 25000 BC). The flake is blade like in shape - being broadly rectangular in plan and triangular / crested in cross section. The striking platform, point and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. There is no evidence of retouch or reworking to form a tool. There is no evidence of multi-directional working - therefore suggesting a blade / core technology prevalent in the later Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The flint is a mottled mid grey colou…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular leaf-shaped flint arrowhead of probable Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead has been broken in the ploughsoil and a single crescent shaped removal is present near the tip. The arrowhead is lentoid (sub-rectangular) in plan and lentoid in cross section. It has been knapped from a very poorly quality mid grey coloured coarse flint. Both faces of the arrowhead have been pressure (ripple) flaked with a series of small neat narrow facets. Much of this rippled surface has been flaked with much skill (especially given the poor nature of the flint). Both long edges exh…

A very large blade or more likely a core rejuvenation flake of likely Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500 - 2500 BC); from the shape of the blade the core has been worked in two opposing (180 degree) directions with the removal of small blades evident in the bladelet scars on the dorsal face. A large area of hinge fracturing is present on the dorsal face - and this is likely to be caused by a flaw within the matrix of the flint. this area has then been deliberately removed to allow the core to continue to be used. The blade is unusually long and thick. The ventral face shows choncoidal…

A secondary debitage flake of Neolithic date (3500-2200BC). The flake which is thick and robust has a large flaw running through it - most probably from a fossil. This flake has been removed from the core to dispose of this and allow other objects to be worked. This debitage has been reworked with several smaller flake removals taken from it - but does not seem to have been utilised within its own right. The flake measures 47.3mm length, 33.8mm width, is 14.1mm thick and weighs 15.4 grams.

Two irregular fragments of debitage - both fragments have distinct areas where parallel sided blade removals have been made. There are no prepared platforms on the larger flake, which has approximately 25% cortex remaining. However. the smaller one seems to have been worked in two separate directions at right-angles to one another, prior to the large flake being removed. This smaller flake has had all the cortex removed and is a mid cream grey colour. The larger flake is a dark black brown colour. Both flints have been heavily rolled in the ploughsoil and all surfaces are abraded. …
