Record ID: LVPL-A2AD92
Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint scraper or blade from the end of the Mesolithic period. The scraper is hexagonal in plan. The two long sides both look to have some retouching. The dorsal face has had 3 flakes taken off, the centre is flat with sloping sides. The ventral face shows the conchoidal ripples caused by striking the flake from its core. The top end appears broken which would suggest a function as a blade rather than a scraper. At the bottom the end has been retouched, to make it flatter, there is no clear striking platform. The flint is a brown colour all over. This flint was seen by Peter Reavill…

Lithic Implement: A single chunky blade fragment or possibly part of a multi-platform core. The object is sub-triangular in cross-section. The blade has been lightly retouched on each long edge and cars of earlier removals are evident running vertically along the upper face of the object. The flint is a dark to mid brown colour with a silky smooth patina. It can be dated from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period, (8300BC- 2100BC).

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint knife probably dating from the Neolithic period. It is formed on a large flat blade of dark grey flint. There is retouch on each side and the distal end of the tool. The blade has been worked opposite the flat bulbar edge and was probably used as a tool. The object is plano-convex in cross-section and the tip of the object has broken away. The blade could be from an earlier or later assemblage (ie Mesolithic or Bronze Age) however as it was found in association with LVPL-OFD487, LVPL-FF1938 and it is therefore likely to fall into the early Neolithic period. Blades ar emost c…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper formed on a flake of secondary debitage, dating to the Neolithic period. The object is plano-convex in cross-section and irregular in plan. It curves slightly in profile. Less than 20% of the original cortex remains on the upper face of the object. Both of the long edges have been retouched. There is a small notch out of the side at the proximal end which is likely to be a break rather than deliberate. The flake is formed on a blade of dark grey flint. This object and LVPL-OFD487 have been found in association with LVPL-FE45E5 and have been made from the same flint r…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire

A flint piece of tertiary debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period. It is formed on a short translucent brown blade of dark grey flint. The object is leaf shaped in plan and the tip of the object has broken away. The bulb of percussion is broken. This debitage and LVPL-FF1938 were found in the same area as LVPL-FE45E5 and have been made from the same flint raw material they could possibly be associated with its making (peers comm. Ron Cowell). The piece is local riverine derived glacial flint that is abundant in the stream beds in the area.

A chipped flint axe (not polished), dating to the Neolithic period. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively narrow rounded butt. Both long edges taper evenly and the axe is broadly symmetrical. The axe is knapped from a mottled grey coloured flint with considerable mid-pale grey and milky white inclusions. There is a small oval of the original cortex remaining on one face towards the butt end. The axe is extensively flaked on each face. On each face ther…
