Flint scraper or blade from the end of the Mesolithic period. The scraper is hexagonal in plan. The two long sides both look to have some retouching. The dorsal face has had 3 flakes taken off, the centre is flat with sloping sides. The ventral face shows the conchoidal ripples caused by striking the flake from its core. The top end appears broken which would suggest a function as a blade rather than a scraper. At the bottom the end has been retouched, to make it flatter, there is no clear striking platform. The flint is a brown colour all over. This flint was seen by Peter Reavill…

Incomplete flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is present on the reverse (ventral face) of the blade. The striking platform is also present and the edges have been trimmed by retouch. The front face of the blade (dorsal face) has a number of clear facets and ridges. There is an area of relative recent damage on one edge. There are several small areas of retouch present on the long edges; this is haphazard and has been partially distorted by hinge fr…

Snapped end of a chert blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The microlith tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The chert is very poor quality and flaking has been difficult to achieve. There is no evidence of retouch, cortex or striking platform / bulb of percussion. The chert is a mid mottled grey colour with a number of flaws in the matrix. It has also been abraded in the ploughsoil. The source of chert is difficult to ascertain. The blade measures 17.3mm length, 13.5 mm width, is 6.2mm thick and weighs 1.16 grams.

Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The flint is relatively coarse and may be chert rather than true flint. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are lost. The front face of the blade (dorsal face) has a number of clear facets and ridges. There is an area of relative recent damage on the lower edge and base. It is difficult to assess retouch as the blade has been rolled in the ploughsoil and any retouch has been masked by modern hinge fractures. There…

This is a small flint blade or knife of the Neolithic period. Beneath the percussion platform, the ventral surface shows a diffuse bulb of percussion with the classic concentric pattern to the distal end. On the dorsal side, the cutting edge has been formed by the removal of at least two flakes, leaving a shallow angle to the 'front' part of the cutting edge and a steeper angle with near vertical striations running down it on the 'rear' part. Also on the dorsal surface is a central ridge and some proximal end scarring; to one side of the ridge, cortex runs the length of the blade. T…

Small snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (5000-4000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in both plan and cross section. The flake has an irregular snapped top edge which has removed the bulb of percussion and upper part of the blade. The break may be old. The blade has number of regular facets created by flaking on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The long edges do not seem to be retouched. There is no cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal face. This suggests that this blade comes from a well worked core. The flint is a …

A flint blade snapped at both ends of Mesolithic date (6500-4500BC). The blade is irregular being broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. One edge has an area of relatively recent plough damage removing a large irregular section. The other is retouched with multiple areas of direct and indirect percussion forming a serrated cutting edge. This retouch is applied to the dorsal face of the blade. The ventral is unworked showing conchoidal ripples. The flint is a dark grey brown colour. The blade measures 24.9mm length, 18.9mm width is 5.1mm thick and we…

Two (2) struck flint blades of Mesolithic date (6500-4500BC). These blades are broadly sub-rectangular in plan with slightly tapering long edges; they are sub-triangular in cross section. Both the blades are formed from a good quality, non-local dark brown coloured flint. The larger exhibits conchoidal ripples, bulb of percussion and striking platform, whereas on the smaller one these have been trimmed through secondary working. Both blades have multiple flake scars on the dorsal face. Both are also reworked but unusually this is on the ventral face. On both the reworking has been app…

Flint debitage flake from the tertiary phase of knapping probably dating from the later Mesolithic or early Neolithic period (4500-2900 BC). The flake is irregular being broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It has been removed as a piece of waste in one clear blow, this has left a clear knapping platform, bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures on the ventral (lower) face. This blow has been struck in a slightly different direction to that of the flake scars on the dorsal face. These dorsal scars seem to suggest that a series of long vertical blades had bee…

Five blades of varying lengths and thicknesses of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The sections of the blades vary, some are triangular (crested) whilst others are flatter lentoid shaped. All have multiple linear facets on the dorsal faces and conchoidal fractures on the ventral. Some are snapped, others still possess their bulbs of percussion / striking platforms. Some also have small areas of cortex present, suggesting they come from the outer surface of prepared cores. The majority of the blades are plough rolled and have thick white surface patinas. Complete flint blade of probable earlier Mesolithic date (6500BC - 4500BC). The flint blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and triangular (crested) in cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the upper of the ventral (lower) face. The lower (pointed) end shows evidence of retouch using a direct percussion from a hammerstone. One of the long edges also shows evidence of retouch, although this maybe an artificial artefact caused by movement in the ploughsoil. The flint is a mid creamy grey colour. This flint is likely to have come from a riverine or…

Flint side and end scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is formed from a piece of secondary debitage / waste from tool making. It is broadly oval in plan being formed from a relatively thick flake; it is oval in cross section. The upper dorsal has a large area of cream white coloured cortex present. The exposed flint on this face has been carefully and evenly knapped. The edges have been trimmed and retouched to form a scraping and serrated cutting edge. Flint blade, probably dating to the later Mesolithic (6500-3500 BC). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan with a series of multiple blade facets on the upper dorsal face. The ventral face shows evidence of knapping platform, conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion. There is no evidence of retouch and some of the flake facets show distinct overhangs. This flake could possibly be used to rejuvenate the core by removing a flaw or irregular part. This may explain the irregular ‘chunky’ nature of this flake. The blade measures: 36.7mm length, 14.2mm width is 7.7mm thick and w…

An irregular chunk of flint which has been irregularly knapped, possibly being used as a crude core in the later Mesolithic or Neolithic period 4000 – 3000 BC. The flint has an area of outer cortex present; this is less than 50% of the surface. One surface has a deep uncontrolled fracture probably caused by movement in the soil. The other faces are knapped, albeit poorly, and a series of long relatively parallel scars are present. The flint is of relatively poor quality and there are a number of hinge fractures caused by flaws within the matrix of the flint. It is likely that this

Snapped and heavily retouched blade like microlith of probable late Mesolithic or early Neolithic date (4500-3500 BC). The blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The upper (dorsal) face exhibits multiple (4) parallel vertical flake scars which are neatly applied suggesting that the blade was removed from a much worked core.
