Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic flint tool; an end and side scraper, which appears to have been manufactured on a rounded flake. The scraper is 35.6mm long and 30.3mm wide. It is a primary flake, with cortex covering c70% of the dorsal side. The cortex is pale grey; otherwise, the flint is dark grey, with a white band in the distal part. The platform is also bright white, and the area above the bulb on the ventral side is paler grey with orange flecks. Almost the entire perimeter of the dorsal side has been invasively retouched. On the ventral side, the bulb scars are faint. The platform is an irregular l…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tool, a knife, probably dating from the late Neolithic. The knife is 48.3mm long, 15.1mm wide and 4.6mm thick. It is formed on a tertiary flake which is rounded at both ends. Both edges are retouched, but they are also extensively damaged. It is similar to a plano-convex knife on page 171 of “Prehistoric Flintwork” by Chris Butler (2005), but is less invasively worked. The flint is an opaque and patinated brownish grey colour.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Sheffield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint fragment of a core. It is probably a two-platform core, with knapping on the dorsal side but not the ventral. The flint has a small piece of cortex remaining on the proximal edge. It measures 20.4mm x 19.2mm x 6.9mm, weighing 3.69g. This crude core flake seems to have been discarded after only a few knaps. This is typical of the later Neolithic to early Bronze Age when, generally speaking, less care was taken with the raw material.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age (2500 BC-1500 BC). The arrowhead is made from dark opaque brown coloured flint and has a squared tang with rounded barbs. The termination of the flake at the square tang has not been broken; rather, there exists tiny removals, showing that the shape was deliberate. The flint has also been retouched by pressure flaking across all surfaces. Examples may be found in Edmonds' Stone Age Tools and Society, page 142, figure 114. A flint scraper dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (2500-1500 BC). This scraper is sub square and has cortex on one side. The distal end might be a small striking platform and the right edge at the distal end shows retouch off the cortex and is the scraping end. It also has further retouch on the side to the left of the distal end but this is not denticulate as the retouch is too small. It has retouch around the sides which is abrupt and semi-abrupt. The scraper is an opaque brown with an outer cortex that is a creamy orange with a white edge. Length: 25.3mm; Wid…
