Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped lithic implement of Mesolithic date. The object is a microlith - or snapped flint blade, rectangular in plan and triangular in section with a pronounced spinal ridge. Both the ends are snapped off removing the striking platform, bulb percussion and ripples of percussion.
The flint is a light grey colour with small white inclusions. The microlith is 20.8mm long, 15.3mm wide, 3.7mm thick and weighs 1.3g.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A collection of three worked flints from a late Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape, dated to c.2400 to 1500BC. The flints were found whilst walking in an area where there is a cluster of bowl barrows and a nearby hill fort.
1. A thin blade of pale grey opaque flint, oblong in shape with a triangular cross section. The dorsal surface has two longitudinal arrises formed where three parallel flakes have been removed. the ventral surface is slightly concave. There is an abrubt break at the proximal end which appears to have removed the bulb of percussion. Half the length of the top edg…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint blade of Mesolithic date.
This is a flint blade from a tertiary flake of buff coloured flint, a rhomboid shape Length: 43.61mm, Width: 18.99mm, Thickness 5.84mm and weight: 6.1g with roughly parallel sides.
There is a clear point of percussion, a small bulb of percussion and bulbar scar on the ventral face. This would indicate the use of a soft hammer.
Long parallel flakes have been removed from the dorsal face and there is very fine scaled retouch on parts of the lateral edges. One lateral side has one large and one small notches possibly from later damag…

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint probable Mesolithic microlith dating from 10,000 BC - 4000 BC. It is a roughly triangular microlith, stuck on a tertiary flake. The dorsal face has previous blade removal scars running across it from right to left, suggesting that this flake was struck sideways from a larger blade. The proximal end is pointed and the distal left corner is snapped off. The left edge appears to be broken, but there is abrupt, scaled retouch on the right edge, removing the striking platform of the original blade.
The object is 20.7m long, 10.2mm wide and 2.3mm thick. It weighs 0.4g.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint probable scraper of uncertain date, Mesolithic to Bronze Age (9000 BC - 1000 BC). It is formed on a tertiary flake of light yellow grey flint. It is sub-rectangular in plan and in cross-section with one rounded end. There is no obvious striking platform and the sides and ventral face are very flat, perhaps suggesting natural fractures rather than worked faces. However, there is a removal scar across the dorsal face and invasive, scaled semi-abrupt retouch on the curved end, probably to form a scraper, but perhaps one end of a fabricator. It is 15.9mm long, 12mm wide and 6.9mm …

A flint scraper of probable Neolithic date (4000 BC - 2200 BC). It is formed on a tertiary flake of grey flint. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The distal end is a hinged termination and the left side is curved and is retouched with short, sub-parallel, abrupt removals. It is 26.5mm long, 15.5mm wide and 4.9mm thick. 2.3g.

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint possible incomplete leaf arrowhead of Neolithic date (4000 BC - 2200 BC). It is formed on a tertiary flake of light grey flint and is oval in plan. The distal end is snapped. The ventral face is not worked, but the dorsal face has covering, scaled, low angle retouch. It is also possible that this flint is the end of a plano-convex knife. It is 16.4mm long, 17.5mm wide and 4mm thick. 1.34g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two flint flakes discovered together that date to the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age (c.3500-2000 BC).
1.
This larger flake presents evidence of retouch on the dorsal face with a small portion of cortex along one edge. The ventral face presents a slight bulb of percussion. The flake is struck from a light brown flint with cream inclusions.
Dimensions: Length 24.6mm; width 18.1mm; thickness 4.3mm; weight 2.61g
2.
The smaller of the two flakes presents a prominent bulb of percussion. It is struck from a light brown flint with black inclusions.
