Record ID: HESH-E439F6
Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small segment of a snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and profile and consists of the lower part of a blade. It measures ??? length, ??? width, and is ??? thick. The blade weighs ???. The bulb of percussion has been snapped off, and this end has been roughly trimmed. The opposite end has also been trimmed, but this has been achieved by more careful knapping. The left hand long vertical side has been reworked. There are also a number of scars on the blade presumably caused by damage in the plough soil. …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unusually thick flint scraper formed on tertiary debitage flake (from the third and final phase of tool making) dating from the later Neolithic or Bronze Age period (3500-2100 BC). The scraper is formed from an oval shaped thick flake of poor quality flint. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion . The dorsal face has a number of irregular and regular flake scars. Both long edge has been crudely reworked / retouched with small irregular flakes creating by direct percussion creating a poor cutting / scraping serrated edge. Modern abrasion / plough roll h…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Relatively small flint thumbnail scraper (side and end) of probable later Neolithic - Early Bronze Age (3000-1800 BC), The flint is a pale brown pink colour with small a amount of white cortex on the upper / dorsal surface. There are signs of retouching on the edges of three sides - this retouch is best described as short sub-parallel, and abrupt. The scraper appears to be highly polished that suggests that it is a reworked flake from a larger implement, possibly an axe head. The scraper measures 20mm length, 14.2mm width and 6.5mm thick; it weighs 2.10 grams

County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint flake of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2500 BC), a waste flake - secondary debitage - of mid grey colour with small amount of white cortex on one face. There is no secondary retouching on any of the surfaces suggesting that this is a discarded flake - produced during knapping. The flake measures 33mm length, 14.1mm width, is 5.9 mm thick and weighs 3.4 grams.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large scraper formed from a broad / wide blade knapped from a pale grey coloured flint . The ventral face shows a bulb of percussion and series of choncoidal ripples. The dorsal face has multiple flake facets / scars. Three of the sides have short abrupt retouching whilst the other has a shallower angled retouch. This suggests it may be a combination tool used for cutting and scraping. The large size of the tool may suggest a late Neolithic or early Bronze age date, this is also reflected in flints of these periods found in the nearby vicinity. The flake measures 51.39mm length, …

A small blade, possibley a burin / boring tool, formed on a pale grey coloured flint. The point of percussion is on the narrow pointed end. The dorsal face shows signs of retouching on one short side only, and has a small crested central ridge with shallow angled sides. This suggests it may be a combination blade / boring tool. Their is a good patination to the flint. The size and form of the tool suggests a later Mesolithic date - however it was found amongst a scatter of flints dating to the mid to late Neolithic date. The flint measures 35.5mm length, 22.71mm width, is 4.38mm…

A blade, possibly a burin / boring tool, formed on a mid grey coloured flint. The point of percussion is on the narrow pointed end. The ventral face shows signs of minor retouching on both the longer sides, the dorsal face has 1 central ridge and shallow angled sides with cortex remaining with retouching on the same faces as the ventral side plus tertiary retouching to the tip. This suggests it may be a combination blade / boring tool. The shape suggests that it may be the distal end of a larger blade but the patination on the sheared steep faced end would age the break to occuring in…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An Early to Middle Neolithic knife knapped from a mid-brown coloured flint dating to circa 4000 - 3500 BC. The flint object is D shaped in plan and is knapped from a secondary flake. The dorsal face has been re-worked on the straight edge from the proximal to distal end. The retouch is long, stepped and semi-abrupt. The opposing long edge has cortex present covering 50% that would have enabled the flint to be handled and used as a knife. The other 50% of the long edge has a 'backed edge' with abrupt retouch. The distal end on the dorsal face has been knapped to form a point. The ventr…

Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cobble-sized irregular lump of flint with several areas of crushing suggestive of past use as a hammerstone. It also appears that at least one flake may have been struck from it. A roughly triangular area of whitish cortex survives on one surface, elsewhere the flint ranges in colour from cream to light green-grey to green-black. A chance find whilst metal detecting (Jeff Spencer, CPAT, January 2015).
