Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A chunk of secondary flint that may have been an implement of Neolithic origin. The section is thick at 11.45mm but there are signs of it having been worked. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion with bulbar scaring and the dorsal face has two dorsal ridges and scarring with the remnants of cortex. The lower edge has then been re-touched with conchoidal scarring along the edge. In use it would perhaps have been a scraper.
The material is a dark brown flint with small light and dark pinpoint inclusions

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A discoidal flint flake of probable Neolithic date that may have been used as a side scraper. There is a very pronounced bulb of percussion and rippling to the ventral surface. The dorsal side has cortex covering over approximately 30% of its surface and a single ridge, much of the remaining surface has distinct rippling from previous removals. The scraping edge (25mm long) exhibits apparently deliberate retouch along approximately half of its length (14mm). The material is a mid-brown flint with some darker 'cloudy' inclusions.

Flint ‘thumbnail’ scraper of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC). The flint flake is broad and squat being broadly oval in plan and sub-rectangular (D shaped) in cross section. It measures 20.8mm length, 19mm width, is 9mm thick and weighs 3.98 grams.
Evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen on the two sides and the front end / edge of the flake; these facets are small neat and regular. The right hand edge and tip have been worked more intensively than the left. The reverse face (ventral) has not been worked. It is likely that this scr…

Flint end scraper of probable Neolithic (2900 - 2100 BC). The scraper has been formed from a tertiary waste flake / debitage and is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. It measures 27.5mm length, 17.9mm width, is 4.2mm thick and weighs 1.89 grams.
Evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen only on the wide end edge of the flake. This reworking is limited to hard (abrupt) hammering to form a crude serrated edge. This is the only area of retouch present and suggests that the flake was selected to create a tool with a relatively limited lifespan (the length of one…

Two struck debitage / waste flakes of mid brown coloured flint that have been retouched to form irregular multi sided scrapers, probably of later Neolithic date (2500 to 2000 BC). One flake is roughly rectangular in plan and demonstrates small facets along the edges of the dorsal (upper) face. This probable scraper has been manufactured from a secondary debitage flake, as there is a small amount (less than 25% of surface area) of cortex (outer rind) present . The dorsal (upper) surface demonstrates a series of flint flake facets in various directions. The ventral (lower) surfce demons…

A Flint scraper of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age Date (2500 - 1500 BC). The flint flake is almost semi-circular in shape and oval in cross section. There are a series of uncontrolled fractures and plough roll along the edge of the scraper. There is a small amount of cortex (outer rind) present, less than 25%. The upper face (dorsal) demonstrates several ridges and fracture scars whereas the lower face (ventral) demonstrates conchoidal ripples. It measures 35.66mm length, 22.38mm width, 9.77mm thick and weighs 8.7 grams.

A retouched scraper formed from a tertiary debitage / waste flake of Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). It is sub oval in plan and D-shaped in cross section. The proximal end demonstrates a striking platform, with conchoidal ripples radiating down the vental (lower) face of the flake. The dorsal (upper) surface exhibits a clear central ridge, with a series of controlled flaking scars along the edge of the flake. There is evidence of uncontrolled flaking scars, probably the result of movement in the soil. The flint is a mid grey colour. It measures 32.76mm length, 34.04mm width, 9.88mm t…

An unusually thick flint scraper formed on tertiary debitage flake (from the third and final phase of tool making) dating from the later Neolithic or Bronze Age period (3500-2100 BC). The scraper is formed from an oval shaped thick flake of poor quality flint. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion . The dorsal face has a number of irregular and regular flake scars. Both long edge has been crudely reworked / retouched with small irregular flakes creating by direct percussion creating a poor cutting / scraping serrated edge. Modern abrasion / plough roll h…

A complete Neolithic scraper made on a flake of mottled grey flint which is also partly comprised of a matt grey inclusion. The scraper is roughly triangular in shape and is gently domed in profile. The ventral surface is smooth with a distinctive, large flake scar (on the left hand side in the photo). The dorsal surface has 3 or 4 large flake scars and there are at least three areas of quite steep retouch on the edges. The flint is opaque.
It is 31mm long, 27.5mm wide and 7mm thick. It weighs 7g.

The tool dates from the later Neolithic or possibly the Early Bronze Age periods (2900-2100 BC) and is formed from a squat oval flake of relatively high quality flint. In profile and in cross section it is D shaped. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples a point and bulb of percussion . The base / distal end has a well prepared platform from which the flake has been removed. The dorsal face has a number of irregular and regular flake scars - as well as a single large area o…

This is a small secondary flake, possibly a flint scraper of Neolithic origin. The piece has a diffuse bulb of percussion to the ventral side and some very fine parallel direct re-touch to the rounded edge beneath the cortex. The dorsal side has remaining cortex with negative scars running off the single dorsal ridge. There are a number of conchoidal scars with re-working to the convex edge that cause the piece to resemble a denticulate side scraper.
The piece has a mottled dark to light brown colour and a number of pale cream inclusions.
