Record ID: CPAT-073E64
Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is a flint piece from a post medieval flintlock musket or pistol. The piece has the typical oblong form with a chisel edge. The long sides have been re-touched and shaped with numerous conchoidal scars to form the straight edges. These flints were in use from the early 17th century into the early 19th century. The material is a mid brown flint with sparse dark inclusions.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A triangulate worked flint blade of Neolithic origin (3500-2100BC). The ventral surface has a small bulb of percussion with faint trace of the percussion ripples across the surface. The dorsal side has a single lateral edge/dorsal ridge, running the length of the blade with dorsal scarring along much of its length. The cutting edge is formed on the slightly convex side with direct parallel retouch, some of which looks to have been damaged through the passage of time. The material is a multi coloured (pale cream/brown/red) and partly translucent flint with numerous inclusions of ferr…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of 8 struck or burnt flints collected from the same field. It comprises: the distal ends of two thin blades (incl. i), of triangular cross-section in pale grey and pale grey/brown flint, a flake (ii) with a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and a single ridge down the dorsal surface, of triangular cross-section but thicker than a blade, in mottled dark grey flint, a scraper (iii) with a bulb of percussion and scarring on the ventral surface with a small section of cortex and retouch at the distal end forming a convex scraping edge…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knife or scraper made from a flint flake of roughly triangular cross-section. It has a small bulb of percussion beneath the striking platform and the proximal end appears to have been worked to form the curved part of the cutting/scraping edge. It also appears to have been left with a sharp point. The ventral surface is gently undulating. The dorsal surface has a predominant ridge with dorsal scarring to one side. The convex cutting/scraping edge has evenly spaced parallel re-touch. The material appears to be a pale grey and brown banded flint.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A discoidal flint flake of probable Neolithic date that may have been used as a side scraper. There is a very pronounced bulb of percussion and rippling to the ventral surface. The dorsal side has cortex covering over approximately 30% of its surface and a single ridge, much of the remaining surface has distinct rippling from previous removals. The scraping edge (25mm long) exhibits apparently deliberate retouch along approximately half of its length (14mm). The material is a mid-brown flint with some darker 'cloudy' inclusions.

A struck flint flake of probable Neolithic date, with characteristics of both a scraper and a blade. This artefact exhibits a good striking platform, beneath which there is a clear bulb of percussion and subsequent ripples on the ventral surface. The dorsal side has a single dorsal ridge with some scarring to the proximal end. Both long edges have possible evidence of slight retouch. The material is of a mid grey/brown flint with coarse inclusions or fossils.

This is a fine example of a lithic tool with a well defined blade in the ‘backed knife’ style. The material is a mottled tan flint, probably Neolithic in origin. It may reasonably be considered a blade/knife due to a cutting edge length, more than three times its width. From the proximal end, there is a clear bulb of percussion with undulating percussion ripples from the bulb, running down the ventral surface to the feather termination at the distal end. The cutting surface has a length of 5.75mm and there is a conchoidal fracture to the back edge. The dorsal surface is marke…

This is a particularly interesting example of a tertiary lithic tool, or interior flake, lacking as it does any sign of the cortex. The material is opaque mottled pale cream and has a fine microcrystalline structure with apparent mineral inclusions; the surface has the waxy lustre of chalcedony. The ventral surface exhibits a delaminated or, exfoliation area which may be the result of a fault within the structure of the material. It has a longitudinal length of approximately 2.5 times its width and may thus be considered a ‘blade’. Due to the relative 'bluntness' of the back s…

Four struck or knapped snapped blades of later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). All four blades vary in size and shape. However, all are sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. Most of the blades consist of a bulb of percussion and all show conchoidal fractures. One piece (the light pink coloured blade) is formed from chert and is much coarser in matrix than the others. One blade (the smallest of the group) has blunt retouch along one side, creating a serrated edge. Another (with the point) has been retouched from the point to half way along the edge, creating a cur…

Small waste blade, core trimming flake, of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade has a small area of cortex on the outer edge and shows several distinct facets where previous blades have been removed. There is no retouch present. It is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky whit coloured patina. It measures 21.4mm length, 10mm width is 4.4mm thick and weighs 0.99 grams

Multi faceted core which has been worked in several directions from opposing striking platforms to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC).. The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex is present on one face. Two striking platforms are present from which blades have been removed, one of these has a series of hinge fractures associated with it and it is suggested that this may be the older face. It seems that the core has not been rejuvenated and instead blades have been taken in a separate direction. The cor…
