Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is a particularly interesting example of a tertiary lithic tool, or interior flake, lacking as it does any sign of the cortex. The material is opaque mottled pale cream and has a fine microcrystalline structure with apparent mineral inclusions; the surface has the waxy lustre of chalcedony. The ventral surface exhibits a delaminated or, exfoliation area which may be the result of a fault within the structure of the material. It has a longitudinal length of approximately 2.5 times its width and may thus be considered a ‘blade’. Due to the relative 'bluntness' of the back s…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Four struck or knapped snapped blades of later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). All four blades vary in size and shape. However, all are sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. Most of the blades consist of a bulb of percussion and all show conchoidal fractures. One piece (the light pink coloured blade) is formed from chert and is much coarser in matrix than the others. One blade (the smallest of the group) has blunt retouch along one side, creating a serrated edge. Another (with the point) has been retouched from the point to half way along the edge, creating a cur…

Small waste blade, core trimming flake, of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade has a small area of cortex on the outer edge and shows several distinct facets where previous blades have been removed. There is no retouch present. It is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky whit coloured patina. It measures 21.4mm length, 10mm width is 4.4mm thick and weighs 0.99 grams

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Multi faceted core which has been worked in several directions from opposing striking platforms to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC).. The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex is present on one face. Two striking platforms are present from which blades have been removed, one of these has a series of hinge fractures associated with it and it is suggested that this may be the older face. It seems that the core has not been rejuvenated and instead blades have been taken in a separate direction. The cor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large piece of raw flint / chert like material from which a series of blades and flakes have been removed. It is not a traditional core and is likely to represent a piece of raw material rather than waste. From the style of working it would suggest an early Neolithic date (c. 3500-2500 BC), with relatively large blade like flakes being removed. There are several areas of cortex present and this is abraded in nature suggesting a riverine or glacial source. The matrix of the flint is relatively coarse and it is possible that it is chert rather than true flint. It is a mid grey black col…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint ‘thumbnail’ scraper of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC). The flint flake is broad and squat being broadly oval in plan and sub-rectangular (D shaped) in cross section. It measures 20.8mm length, 19mm width, is 9mm thick and weighs 3.98 grams. Evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen on the two sides and the front end / edge of the flake; these facets are small neat and regular. The right hand edge and tip have been worked more intensively than the left. The reverse face (ventral) has not been worked. It is likely that this scr…

Four tertiary waste flakes / debitage of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2900 – 1800 BC). All the flakes are irregular in plan and profile with a series of varying sized flake facets present on the outer (dorsal) faces. All have clear bulbs of percussion and conchoidal fractures. There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present making this material relatively rare in not being reworked. All the flints are patinated and slightly white / milky surface colour. They have combined weight of 12.57 grams 1. Measures 26.4mm length, 22.4mm width is 6.9mm thick and weighs…

Flint end scraper of probable Neolithic (2900 - 2100 BC). The scraper has been formed from a tertiary waste flake / debitage and is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. It measures 27.5mm length, 17.9mm width, is 4.2mm thick and weighs 1.89 grams. Evidence for retouch or secondary working can be seen only on the wide end edge of the flake. This reworking is limited to hard (abrupt) hammering to form a crude serrated edge. This is the only area of retouch present and suggests that the flake was selected to create a tool with a relatively limited lifespan (the length of one…

Fragment from the butt of a flint knife of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. It measures 31.3mm length, 30.4mm width, is 4.7mm thick and weighs 3.57 grams. The fragment is relatively thin and broken across its widest edge. It consists of the butt of a relatively fine and well made knife or dagger. Both faces exhibit areas of very fine pressure flaking and the edges also show evidence of retouch. It is possible that the flake has been reworked after breaking and used as a form of blad…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment of flint that has the characteristics of it being the proximal end of a Neolithic flint implement. The ventral surface has a clear bulb of percussion to the proximal end with diffuse percussion ripples across what remains of the ventral surface. The dorsal side has four distinct radial dorsal scars from the central ridge. The artefact then appears to have been broken away from what may have been a blade or conceivably, a prepared faceted butt. There are signs of retouch to the tip on the ventral side but none to the dorsal side. Although not typical of a scraper, it…

This flint object has the characteristics of a Neolithic knapped tool, probably an edge scraper. The proximal end has a small percussion platform, a percussion bulb and a single bulbar scar with fine radiating fissures running down the ventral side. In side view, the tool has a distinct conchoidal curve, from where it has been struck from the core. There is no evidence of rippling on the ventral surface. The dorsal side has two distinct lateral edges, evidence of earlier flint removal from the core when this piece was still in situ. There is some dorsal scarring. There appear to…

This flint object is probably a truncated Neolithic blade. When you run a finger tip up the ventral surface, there is a diffuse yet distinct bulbar scar, indicating the distal end. The dorsal surface has a single distinct lateral edge. There is little sign of any re-touch however, there is on close examination, some edge feathering and adjacent conchoidal scarring (nibbling?) present on the edge at the probable break point. Perhaps we have the remains of a once longer blade. That edge which remains has a length of 25.8mm. The material is a pale to mid brown flint with a single p…

Tertiary waste of pale grey-yellow coloured flint probably dating to the (earlier) Neolithic period (4000 - 2500 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular with an unusual fracture on one edge (possibly a hinge fracture). There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present. The edge of the flake nearest bulb of percussion shows a series of relic scars from previous working. These are damaged by plough abrasion butt suggest that a series of small narrow blade were removed prior to the creation of this flake. Tertiary waste of dark grey coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic period (3500 - 2500 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular with clear flake facets on the dorsal face. The ventral face has a clear bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures; the bulb has been trimmed as has the striking platform on the edge of the flake. The flake is heavily plough rolled and evidence of reworking cannot be seen. It is possible it may have been reworked into a side scraper.
