Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete fragment from the tip of a knife or more probably sickle knapped from a light grey coloured flint probably dating to the later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age periods (2500-1800 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular with a bowed curved edge; it is lentoid in cross section. Both the ventral and dorsal faces of the flake have been reworked. This secondary reworking is best seen on the curved edge where detailed neat small flakes have been removed by indirect retouch and pressure flaking. On the dorsal face this working extends up to the mid point of the blade, with a series o…

Tertiary waste of mid grey coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age period (3500 – 1800 BC). The flake is irregular being broadly sub-triangular with a bowed curved edge. Clear secondary pressure flaking facets can be seen on the dorsal face along one edge. The purpose of this flaking is unclear and it is likely that this flake has been removed from a much larger tool, possibly a plano-convex knife or sickle. The flake measures: 15.6mm length, 13.2mm width is 6.1mm thick and weighs 1.27 grams

Tertiary waste of mid grey / white coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age period (3500 – 1800 BC). The flake is irregular being broadly sub-triangular with a bowed curved edge. Clear secondary pressure flaking facets can be seen on almost the entire dorsal face. The ventral face is unworked. The purpose of this flaking is unclear and it is likely that this flake has been removed from a much larger tool either to repair it or rework it. The type off tool is unclear, possibly a plano-convex knife or sickle. The flake measures: 13mm length, 15.5mm width …

Tertiary waste of mid grey coloured flint probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age period (3500 – 1800 BC). The flake is irregular with a bowed curved edge. The flake has been heavily reworked although the type of artefact is difficult to ascertain. The artefact type is probably best described as a scraper, although it is a particularly poor example. One edge has been heavily reworked with multiple parallel sided facets. The curved edge also has reworking although this abrupt flaking with a hard a hammer in most places. The ventral face is also flaked but less intensively…
