Small snapped blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade is irregular and possibly is a core rejuvenation flake. The blade consists a clear faceted striking platform on one edge, below which a series of flake scars are present on the dorsal face. The upper scar on the dorsal face is irregular, possibly due to a flaw in the flint. The lower two scar facets represent the removal of blades in an opposite direction (probably with the core being worked in a direction of 180 degree to the striking platform present on this flake. The reverse (ventral) face has several a…

Four struck or knapped snapped blades of later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). All four blades vary in size and shape. However, all are sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. Most of the blades consist of a bulb of percussion and all show conchoidal fractures. One piece (the light pink coloured blade) is formed from chert and is much coarser in matrix than the others. One blade (the smallest of the group) has blunt retouch along one side, creating a serrated edge. Another (with the point) has been retouched from the point to half way along the edge, creating a cur…

Small waste blade, core trimming flake, of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade has a small area of cortex on the outer edge and shows several distinct facets where previous blades have been removed. There is no retouch present. It is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky whit coloured patina. It measures 21.4mm length, 10mm width is 4.4mm thick and weighs 0.99 grams

Multi faceted core which has been worked in several directions from opposing striking platforms to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC).. The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex is present on one face. Two striking platforms are present from which blades have been removed, one of these has a series of hinge fractures associated with it and it is suggested that this may be the older face. It seems that the core has not been rejuvenated and instead blades have been taken in a separate direction. The cor…

Snapped flint blade, probably dating to the later Mesolithic or early Neolithic periods (6500-2900 BC). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan with a series of four blade facets on the upper dorsal face. The ventral face shows evidence off conchoidal ripples but there is no evidence of the bulb of percussion. The upper and lower edges have both been snapped. There is little evidence of retouch; it is possible that there is direct percussion flaking along one edge, although this can be produced by plough roll. The blade measures: 15.7mm length, 15.5mm width is 2.8mm thick and weighs …

Two tertiary waste flakes / debitage of flint dating to the later Mesolithic - early Bronze Age periods (4500 – 1800 BC). Both the flakes are relatively small being irregular in plan and profile with a series of varying sized flake facets present on the outer faces. There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present. These flakes are clear evidence of flint knapping at this site. It is possible that these represent reduced or reworked cores, due to their chunky nature and multiple faces, however the do not survive well enough to be sure of this hypothesis. Both the pie…

Flint blade, probably dating to the later Mesolithic or early Neolithic periods (6500-2900 BC). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan with a series of multiple blade facets on the upper dorsal face. The ventral face shows evidence off conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion. There is little evidence of retouch; it is possible that there is slight reworking on the ventral face where four parallel flakes have been removed to sharpen a small area. The blade measures: 40.8mm length, 19.1mm width is 7.4mm thick and weighs 3.5 grams

Large irregular much weather nodule of flint, probably used as a raw (although poor quality) flint source for making artefacts in the prehistoric period. The outer edge is covered with cortex (at least 60%) which seems to be derived from chalk. The flake scars present are uncontrolled and this would suggest that this piece comes from one end of a nodule which has been discarded due to its poor state. The noule measures 83.9mm length, 63.3mm width is 4.1mm thick and weighs 184.64 grams.

Six pieces of struck flint; at least three of which suggest tertiary waste from tool making. The other three exhibit irregular flake scars and hinge fractures which might suggest natural frost damage rather than working. One flake is burnt; all flakes are low grade flint common in tool assemblages from the marches. The worked flakes can be broadly dated to the Late Mesolithic or Neolithic tool making tradition c.4500 – 2500 BC. Bulk Weight: 42.75 grams

Flint microlith, formed from the tip of a snapped blade or flake, of probable later Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The microlith is formed from the tip or point of a blade which has been snapped. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. Both the longer edges are heavily reworked with regular evenly spaced flakes forming a serrated point. It is likely that this microlith would have been set with several others into a tool, such as a harpoon, or multiple toothed blade. The flint is a creamy white colour. Segment of a snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and profile and consists of the upper part of a blade. It measures ??? length, ??? width, and is ??? thick. The blade weighs ???. The bulb of percussion is clear on the reverse of the flake; the opposite end has been snapped. The two long vertical sides of the blade have both been reworked / retouched. This is most evident on the middle and upper edges. The left hand edge seems to have been reworked more comprehensively than the right; there is a higher density…
