Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two Mesolithic (c.8300-3500 BC) flint implements. The larger flake, on the right in the photograph, is the retouched tip of a blade implement that has been broken at some point in the past. The flint measures 20.28mm in length, 16.97mm in width, is 3.51mm thick and weighs 1.56g. The smaller flake, on the left in the photograph, is a 'piercer'. There is evidence of retouching along the edges. It has been formed from a flake that was primarily a bladelet blank. The flint measures 15.71mm in length, is 13.66mm wide, has a thickness of 2.8mm and weighs 0.71g.

A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, probably Late Neolithic in date (based on the most similar examples in Bond (2004, 147; ref. 180). One barb is broken with the point missing. The tang is relatively thick (6.9mm) and appears off centre due to a small chip. The point of the head is also snapped off.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, with small amounts of iron stain forming on the dorsal side. There is some patina on the right side of the dorsal side. On the ventral side there is a completely flat face; there are three clear faces on the dorsal. The point is broken off and there is a small chip in the left cutting edge, when looking at the dorsal face. The very deliberate leaf shape leads to the conclusion that this is an arrowhead rather than a microlith, and the date of Later Neolithic is suggested by a similar example, albeit more damaged, in Bond (2004, 142; ref. F140).

A collection of forty-eight (48) core rejuvination flakes of various sizes, dating to the Neolithic period. The majority show surface removals, but none have been retouched for use as either formal or non-formal tools. The majority of the flakes are covered with a white patina covering a blue-grey core, suggesting that the raw material originated from chalk downlands. The closest source is a few miles to the southeast (towards the Ridgeway). Weights vary from 0.7gms to 7.6gms.

The saw appears to have broken at the distal end. The raw material has a thin bluish-white patina and covers a grey-brown core. The flint probably derives from chalk downlands, the closest source being towards the Ridgeway in the southeast. The saw is 54.27mm in length, 21.4mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 7.2gms and dates to the Neolithic period, possibly the middle Neolithic.

A total of eight (8) primary flakes removed during core preperation. Two display hinge fractures, and all have bulbs of percussion. No additional working or retouch is evident. The combined weight of these primary flakes is 52.1gms. These fragments would normally be difficult to date should they have been found in isolation, but the associated lithic implements suggest that they date from the late Mesolithic to the Neolithic periods (6500 - 2100 BC). Two retouched tertiary flakes. Both of the flakes retain the bulb of percussion and one retains the striking platform. Both flakes have bladelet sized removals restricted to their dorsal surfaces. The retouch is minimal and sparodic of both flakes suggesting that they were either production debris, or possibly simple ad hoc tools discarded soon after manufacture. A flint waste flake, primary removal. There is no definitive retouching evident on the ventral surface, although damage has occured and is suggestive of rolling or possibly hammering. The rings of percussion are evident on the ventral surface and a slight hinge fracture mirror is evident. No platform is visible. This is very hard to date without any technological distinctions evident so it could be prehistoric, but could quite easily also be quite modern and may not, necessarily, be man made, although it could have been struck by machinery.

Object type: MACE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint pebble mace head dating from the Neolithic period. The central hole is straight rather than hour-glass shaped - the use of a bow drill (a laborious task through flint) would produce a straight perforation, but this may also be a pebble with a natural hole; if found objects with naturally occurring perforations were utilised by prehistoric man. The nose or tip of the possible mace head shows limited evidence of impact. This possible mace head measures 66.13mm long, 57.81mm wide and is 34.47mm deep. The hole is 20.20mm in diameter and the object weighs 198.5gms.
