A collection of six (6) scrapers recovered during fieldwalking. Each scraper is described individually below while the origin for all of the raw flint material is suggested to be the chalk downlands, probably towards the Ridgeway. 1. A semi-circular scraper made on a secondary flake with retouch confined to the distal side only. Sixteen (16) fragments of debitage and/or waste flakes with a combined weight of 17gms. Most have a whitish or bluish-white patina covering a grey core, suggesting a chalk downland source, possible towards the Ridgeway. These were found in association with many other lithics (see links below). These are suggested to date from the late Mesolithic through the Neolithic era.

Six (6) core fragments or spent cores. Four are covered with a thick white patina over a grey core, while one other has a thin white patina coverage of c. 50% over a grey-blue flint. All are probably late Mesolithic to Neolithic in date, and they have a combined weight of 57.2gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland flint source.

A collection of thirteen (13) core preparation fragments, mostly primary removals. All are probably Mesolithic - Neolithic in date and have a combined weight of 96.4gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland origin as the flint source.

A side-scraper made on a secondary flake with c.40% cortex remaining. There is one flake scar removal on the distal surface, while retouch is evident only on one dorsal edge. The scraper is 33.91mm in length, 23mm in width and 7.04mm thick and weighs 5.76 gms. It may date to the late Mesolithic / early Neolithic periods.

A total of eight (8) primary flakes removed during core preperation. Two display hinge fractures, and all have bulbs of percussion. No additional working or retouch is evident. The combined weight of these primary flakes is 52.1gms. These fragments would normally be difficult to date should they have been found in isolation, but the associated lithic implements suggest that they date from the late Mesolithic to the Neolithic periods (6500 - 2100 BC). As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland origin as the flint source.

A non-formal tool made on a tertiary flake, possibly intended to be a knife. There are three flake removals on the dorsal ridge and retouch is present on the dorsal right side and the ventral right side, but it is not uniform. The raw material is a light grey flint and some white patina is starting to form. Possibly Neolithic or Bronze Age in date.The flake measures 57.77mm long, 13.94mm wide and 8.08mm thick. It weighs 6.1gms.

An unusual flint flake, with some limited retouch along the lateral edges and distal tip. The flake has a natural hole towards the proximal tip, but it does not show signs of human manipulation. The distal tip is hooked and appears to have occured naturally when the flake was struck from the core. Although the retouch is minimal, there are signs of human working, and this flake may have been utilised as a scraper or blade (one edge is quite jagged). A tertiary flake with buff-coloured patina. This flake has been retouched on both lateral edges and the proximal tip, and the bulb has been removed. The same thick patina seen over the dorsal and ventral sides of the flake can be seen over the retouched edges. There is a sub-circular notch fracture at the proximal end, although this appears to be natural. The patina on this flake suggests a date of great antiquity, possible dating from the Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic periods (c.300,000 - 4500 BC). A possible 'thumbnail' type scraper, made from a pebble rather than from a flint nodule core. There is the suggestion of some limited retouch on the tip on both sides. The patina on this object is even all over and a possible Mesolithic date is suggested. The scraper measures 33.19mm long, 27.47mm wide and its thickness ranges from 5.90mm to 13.25mm. It weighs 11.5gms.
