Record ID: HAMP-CF2F28
Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, probably Late Neolithic in date (based on the most similar examples in Bond (2004, 147; ref. 180). One barb is broken with the point missing. The tang is relatively thick (6.9mm) and appears off centre due to a small chip. The point of the head is also snapped off.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, with small amounts of iron stain forming on the dorsal side. There is some patina on the right side of the dorsal side. On the ventral side there is a completely flat face; there are three clear faces on the dorsal. The point is broken off and there is a small chip in the left cutting edge, when looking at the dorsal face. The very deliberate leaf shape leads to the conclusion that this is an arrowhead rather than a microlith, and the date of Later Neolithic is suggested by a similar example, albeit more damaged, in Bond (2004, 142; ref. F140).

A collection of forty-eight (48) core rejuvination flakes of various sizes, dating to the Neolithic period. The majority show surface removals, but none have been retouched for use as either formal or non-formal tools. The majority of the flakes are covered with a white patina covering a blue-grey core, suggesting that the raw material originated from chalk downlands. The closest source is a few miles to the southeast (towards the Ridgeway). Weights vary from 0.7gms to 7.6gms.

A saw blade with serrated edges made on a secondary flake. There is a negative flake scar on the dorsal surface at the proximal end, and a hinge fracture at the distal end. The saw appears to have broken at the distal end. The raw material has a thin bluish-white patina and covers a grey-brown core. The flint probably derives from chalk downlands, the closest source being towards the Ridgeway in the southeast. The saw is 54.27mm in length, 21.4mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 7.2gms and dates to the Neolithic period, possibly the middle Neolithic.

A flint piercer made on an irregular tertiary flake. Retouch is only present on the ventral surface around the piercing projection and half-way up both ventral surface sides. Further removals are present on the proximal dorsal end around the platform. Both the bulb and the concoidal rings are present. The raw material shows some patches of white patination over a dark grey core, suggesting a chalk downland origin, probably to the southeast towards the Ridgeway. The piercer is 31.6mm long, 18.69mm wide and 6.5mm thick and weighs 3.4gms. The piercing tip is 4.15mm in length. It is sugges…

Six (6) core fragments or spent cores. Four are covered with a thick white patina over a grey core, while one other has a thin white patina coverage of c. 50% over a grey-blue flint. All are probably late Mesolithic to Neolithic in date, and they have a combined weight of 57.2gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland flint source.

A non-formal tool made on a tertiary flake, possibly intended to be a knife. There are three flake removals on the dorsal ridge and retouch is present on the dorsal right side and the ventral right side, but it is not uniform. The raw material is a light grey flint and some white patina is starting to form. Possibly Neolithic or Bronze Age in date. The flake measures 57.77mm long, 13.94mm wide and 8.08mm thick. It weighs 6.1gms.

A flint awl dating from the late Neolithic to probably the Middle Bronze Age (c.3000-1200 BC). The awl is made on a secondary flake that is roughly triangular in plan. The flake retains lines of percussion from striking on the ventral surface. The flake displays larger flaked removals and crude retouching that is restricted to the dorsal face only - the tip of the awl (also the proximal end), is now 'snub-nosed', with indications that a hinge fracture occured. This break appears to have occured in antiquity. The patina is even over the tool apart from some small areas that have suffer…
