1 flint chip. A waste product from lithic working which exhibits the typical bulb of percussion and striking platform. The flake has not been retouched and is therefore undiagnostic and difficult to date. A broad date range of Palaeolithic to Neolithc has therefore been given.

Lithic, waste flint flake of uncertain date (probably late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age: 2500-1500 BC). The dorsal (upper) face has one central prominent arise and the striking platform is clearly evident. On the ventral (lower) face the bulb of percussion is less clearly evident. The flint is of poor quality for knapping due to large irregular inclusions. 51.1g

A collection of forty-eight (48) core rejuvination flakes of various sizes, dating to the Neolithic period. The majority show surface removals, but none have been retouched for use as either formal or non-formal tools. The majority of the flakes are covered with a white patina covering a blue-grey core, suggesting that the raw material originated from chalk downlands. The closest source is a few miles to the southeast (towards the Ridgeway). Weights vary from 0.7gms to 7.6gms.

A saw blade with serrated edges made on a secondary flake. There is a negative flake scar on the dorsal surface at the proximal end, and a hinge fracture at the distal end. The saw appears to have broken at the distal end. The raw material has a thin bluish-white patina and covers a grey-brown core. The flint probably derives from chalk downlands, the closest source being towards the Ridgeway in the southeast. The saw is 54.27mm in length, 21.4mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 7.2gms and dates to the Neolithic period, possibly the middle Neolithic.

A flint piercer made on an irregular tertiary flake. Retouch is only present on the ventral surface around the piercing projection and half-way up both ventral surface sides. Further removals are present on the proximal dorsal end around the platform. Both the bulb and the concoidal rings are present. The raw material shows some patches of white patination over a dark grey core, suggesting a chalk downland origin, probably to the southeast towards the Ridgeway. The piercer is 31.6mm long, 18.69mm wide and 6.5mm thick and weighs 3.4gms. The piercing tip is 4.15mm in length. It is sugges…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of six (6) scrapers recovered during fieldwalking. Each scraper is described individually below while the origin for all of the raw flint material is suggested to be the chalk downlands, probably towards the Ridgeway. 1. A semi-circular scraper made on a secondary flake with retouch confined to the distal side only. The flint has some white patina and covers a blue-grey core and dates to the Neolithic 3500-2100 BC. 2. An end and side scraper made on a secondary flake that retains c.40% cortex with retouch confined to the distal side. The flint has a thick bluish-white pat…

Sixteen (16) fragments of debitage and/or waste flakes with a combined weight of 17gms. Most have a whitish or bluish-white patina covering a grey core, suggesting a chalk downland source, possible towards the Ridgeway. These were found in association with many other lithics (see links below). These are suggested to date from the late Mesolithic through the Neolithic era.

Six (6) core fragments or spent cores. Four are covered with a thick white patina over a grey core, while one other has a thin white patina coverage of c. 50% over a grey-blue flint. All are probably late Mesolithic to Neolithic in date, and they have a combined weight of 57.2gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland flint source.

A total of eight (8) primary flakes removed during core preperation. Two display hinge fractures, and all have bulbs of percussion. No additional working or retouch is evident. The combined weight of these primary flakes is 52.1gms. These fragments would normally be difficult to date should they have been found in isolation, but the associated lithic implements suggest that they date from the late Mesolithic to the Neolithic periods (6500 - 2100 BC). As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland origin as the flint source.

There are three flake removals on the dorsal ridge and retouch is present on the dorsal right side and the ventral right side, but it is not uniform. An unusual flint flake, with some limited retouch along the lateral edges and distal tip. The flake has a natural hole towards the proximal tip, but it does not show signs of human manipulation. The distal tip is hooked and appears to have occured naturally when the flake was struck from the core. Although the retouch is minimal, there are signs of human working, and this flake may have been utilised as a scraper or blade (one edge is quite jagged). The tool may have have been utilised as a piercing tool as the tip shows signs of being pressed hard against something and is crushed and …

A tertiary flake with buff-coloured patina. This flake has been retouched on both lateral edges and the proximal tip, and the bulb has been removed. The same thick patina seen over the dorsal and ventral sides of the flake can be seen over the retouched edges. There is a sub-circular notch fracture at the proximal end, although this appears to be natural. The patina on this flake suggests a date of great antiquity, possible dating from the Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic periods (c.300,000 - 4500 BC). This retouched flake may have been used as an end and side scraper. The flake's sha…

A possible 'thumbnail' type scraper, made from a pebble rather than from a flint nodule core. There is the suggestion of some limited retouch on the tip on both sides. The patina on this object is even all over and a possible Mesolithic date is suggested. The scraper measures 33.19mm long, 27.47mm wide and its thickness ranges from 5.90mm to 13.25mm. It weighs 11.5gms.
