A flint flake fragment with extensive edge damage. Although this flake looks a bit like the beginnings of a tanged and barbed arrowhead, its condition and construction suggest that it has actually been produced and used as a gun flint, therefore dating to the Post-medieval period.

A complete flint gunflint dating to the post-medieval period. The gunflint is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in section with broad flakes removed from the dorsal side and with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimming its edges. Flintlock guns were in use in France by c. AD 1600 and it is likely that this example dates from c. AD 1650 - 1850.

A complete knapped gun-flint from a flintlock musket of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1900. The gunflint is broadly rectangular in plan and is of the classic wedge shape being trapezoidal in cross section. Short scaled semi-abrupt around one side and extends halfway along the adjoining edges. No striking platform is present although faint ripples on the reverse indicate it was struck at 90 degrees to the long wedge shaped surface. The flint is a very dark brown grey with very occasional light grey inclusions. The flint is 22.2mm long, 19.0mm wide, 5.0mm thick and weighs 3.31 …

A complete knapped gunflint from a flintlock musket of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1900. The gunflint is rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section.  Like all gunflints, it is wedge-shaped, though this example is not as wide as most.  The blade appears to have undergone a small amount of semi-abrupt retouching on the dorsal side.  At the far end from the blade, sub-parallel lines may indicate where this gunflint was snapped off from a longer length of flint.  There is also some rippling on the distal face. The flint has a glossy su…

An incomplete post-medieval gunflint, made from a dark brown/black tertiary flint flake. The gunflint is broadly wedge-shaped in section and would have been square or rectangular in plan before the post-depositional damage. The gunflake has retouch around all extant edges, the retouch being hard and direct with a scaled appearance. The wedge end of the gunflint is completely retouched, however the dorsal back surface is unworked. Gunflint like these are known from both English and later American Civil War sites and are thought to have been issued during the AD 1650-1660s, possibly alo…
