Record ID: HAMP-CF2F28
Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead, probably Late Neolithic in date (based on the most similar examples in Bond (2004, 147; ref. 180). One barb is broken with the point missing. The tang is relatively thick (6.9mm) and appears off centre due to a small chip. The point of the head is also snapped off.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, with small amounts of iron stain forming on the dorsal side. There is some patina on the right side of the dorsal side. On the ventral side there is a completely flat face; there are three clear faces on the dorsal. The point is broken off and there is a small chip in the left cutting edge, when looking at the dorsal face. The very deliberate leaf shape leads to the conclusion that this is an arrowhead rather than a microlith, and the date of Later Neolithic is suggested by a similar example, albeit more damaged, in Bond (2004, 142; ref. F140).

A collection of forty-eight (48) core rejuvination flakes of various sizes, dating to the Neolithic period. The majority show surface removals, but none have been retouched for use as either formal or non-formal tools. The majority of the flakes are covered with a white patina covering a blue-grey core, suggesting that the raw material originated from chalk downlands. The closest source is a few miles to the southeast (towards the Ridgeway). Weights vary from 0.7gms to 7.6gms.

A saw blade with serrated edges made on a secondary flake. There is a negative flake scar on the dorsal surface at the proximal end, and a hinge fracture at the distal end. The saw appears to have broken at the distal end. The raw material has a thin bluish-white patina and covers a grey-brown core. The flint probably derives from chalk downlands, the closest source being towards the Ridgeway in the southeast. The saw is 54.27mm in length, 21.4mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 7.2gms and dates to the Neolithic period, possibly the middle Neolithic.

Six (6) core fragments or spent cores. Four are covered with a thick white patina over a grey core, while one other has a thin white patina coverage of c. 50% over a grey-blue flint. All are probably late Mesolithic to Neolithic in date, and they have a combined weight of 57.2gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland flint source.

A flint awl dating from the late Neolithic to probably the Middle Bronze Age (c.3000-1200 BC). The awl is made on a secondary flake that is roughly triangular in plan. The flake retains lines of percussion from striking on the ventral surface. The flake displays larger flaked removals and crude retouching that is restricted to the dorsal face only - the tip of the awl (also the proximal end), is now 'snub-nosed', with indications that a hinge fracture occured. A flint blade fragment probably dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000-2500 BC). The blade retains the platform and bulb of percussion, although some attempt to remove the bulb has been made. There is further restricted pressure flaking on one lateral of the ventral side, otherwise there is no secondary working. The distal end of the blade is broken and missing, but this appears to have happened in antiquity as the patina at the break is the same as that covering the rest of the flint.

Two retouched tertiary flakes. Both of the flakes retain the bulb of percussion and one retains the striking platform. Both flakes have bladelet sized removals restricted to their dorsal surfaces. The retouch is minimal and sparodic of both flakes suggesting that they were either production debris, or possibly simple ad hoc tools discarded soon after manufacture. The flakes probably date from the late Neolithic to Bronze Age (c. 3000-1200 BC).

A flint waste flake, primary removal. There is no definitive retouching evident on the ventral surface, although damage has occured and is suggestive of rolling or possibly hammering. The rings of percussion are evident on the ventral surface and a slight hinge fracture mirror is evident. No platform is visible. This is very hard to date without any technological distinctions evident so it could be prehistoric, but could quite easily also be quite modern and may not, necessarily, be man made, although it could have been struck by machinery.

A very angular, rectangular piece of flint, possibly from a spent core. The piece has a couple of thin flake removals evident but otherwise there is no retouching or other work evident, although one of the angular corners appears to have been used for rubbing as it is smooth and rounded, something that must have happened through human interaction. A possible flint pebble mace head dating from the Neolithic period. The central hole is straight rather than hour-glass shaped - the use of a bow drill (a laborious task through flint) would produce a straight perforation, but this may also be a pebble with a natural hole; if found objects with naturally occurring perforations were utilised by prehistoric man. The nose or tip of the possible mace head shows limited evidence of impact. This possible mace head measures 66.13mm long, 57.81mm wide and is 34.47mm deep. A Neolithic stone blade core (3500-2100BC). The core is a green stone chert. The shape, technology and stone all indicate the core is from the Grand Pressigny area, Northern France. It was probably collected by an antiquarian and lost or disposed of. The core has two opposed platforms with at least nine blade removal scars. Neolithic flint axe (3,500-2,100BC). Cream/pale grey flint with iron staining (this usually indicates the flint originated in the Chilterns). Two small areas of polishing, one on each side, but otherwise flake scars are present on all surfaces. The butt end is slightly rounded and the sides taper gradually before tapering in to the pointed opposite end.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. The arrowhead has been pressure flaked and invasively retouched on both sides to create a thin bi-convex lenticular cross-section. The original shape of the barb ends looks to have been square. The triangular tip and a large part of the tang are missing leaving around 70% of the arrowhead intact; a fact which precludes full classification of the piece. Similar arrowheads are shown in Butler.C; Prehistoric Flintwork (2005) p162-165 and are dated to circa 2500-1500 BC.

A Neolithic flint tool, possibly an end scraper (see comment in notes below). The tool may be fashioned on a thermal flake. It is sub plano-convex in section and piriform in plan. Similar scrapers are shown in Butler C. Prehistoric flintwork (2005) p126-128 and are dated to the Neolithic period circa 3500-2100 BC.
