Record ID: SWYOR-BF68E6
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper dating from the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (3500 BC - 1500 BC). It is formed on a flake which is the bulb of percussion from a much larger flint which probably became detached during the knapping process and has been utilised as a blank for a tool. The ventral face is rounded and the dorsal face is flatter. There is semi abrupt retouch at the distal end. The flint has patinated to a creamy white colour, and is very worn perhaps suggesting a watery environment.

It is formed on a snapped bladelet and has been retouched on the distal end and both sides. A similar example is number 20 on page 93 of Butler’s (2005) Prehistoric Flintwork. The flint is mottled light grey and white, and is well patinated. Microliths were used to make composite tools consisting of many microliths set into one setting.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, i.e. c. 2150-1500BC. The arrowhead is of the long narrow type, probably Green’s Sutton Type C. It is made from light/mid-grey non-translucent flint with a long tang and prominent triangular-shaped barbs of which one is broke. The point still retains some sharpness but it has probably been slightly damaged by impact. There are retouch marks all over the surfaces and along the edges and a couple of secondary marks of damage on both surfaces (white marks). This damage probably occurred in more recent times.

Probably a 'Sutton B' type arrowhead (after Green, 1980). Ref: Bond (2004) 'Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics'.
