Brittle grey cloudy flint of mediocre quality Possible debitage. Irregular flint with fracture surfaces on all sides; these include one long scar which may indicate the hard hammer removal of a long flake; however, the other sides are struck and broken irregularly, and the sharp arises between these impact scars are so sharp as to suggest a recent origin through plough strike. Suggested date: Unknown, Neolithic to Modern, 3500BC-2000AD. Length: 53mm, Weight: 23.32gms.

Flint; one fragment (a) is semi-translucent toffee coloured brown with cortex on one face, the other two (b-c) a pale grey. Debitage. Three flint chips (a-c), all from an area where flint is not believed to occur naturally. The brown flint (a) may have retouch - or incidental damage - on two of its edges, while (c) may be a small flake of working waste. Lengths: a) 22.1mm, b) 20.2mm, and c) 15.6mm. Suggested date: Unknown, Mesolithic to Late Bronze Age, 4500-800BC.

Flint scraper. A small thumbnail scraper with cortex remaining on its dorsal surface and with covering angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The struck surfaces are covered by dense creamy patina, suggesting prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, and with orange spotting which may suggest its subsequent incorporation in gravels. The form is usually ascribed to the Early Bronze Age but the condition of the flint might point to an earler date. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age,7000-1600 BC. Dark grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. A thick flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the long curving edge. The material might hint at an earlier date, the trimming of the dorsal side would be apt to Neolithic work, while the retouch may suggest a later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age, 7000-1600 BC. Length: 23.5mm, Width: 32.1mm, Thickness: 8.6mm, Weight: 8.10gms

Red-brown flint with cortex, core. A chunk with broad flakes removed by probably multidirectional hard hammer strike; possibly in discrete episodes, as some struck surfaces appear more weathered than others. This could represent the reuse of a core long after its initial working. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age, 7000-1600 BC. Height: 37.8mm, Width: 32.5mm, Thickness: 23.9mm, Weight: 32.69gms

Flint with reformed cortex possible scraper. A long irregular flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a gently undulating ventral surface. Cortex has reformed over a rounded end, where possible scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect also appears. The opposite end is lightly battered. A dense creamy patina overall suggests the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment; orange spots might suggest its incorporation in gravel. The re-formed cortex might suggest an earlier date than the apparently casual working would c…

Flint possible debitage. Four small irregular flakes, all with flakes struck from their dorsal sides; three retains elements of a bulbar ventral surface while the fourth and longest has a tiny bulb at one end of a concave ventral surface. A dense creamy patina suggests all have endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after their deposition. The finder kindly notes the absence of naturally occurring flint in the vicinity, which has encouraged the consideration of these pieces. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Neolithic, 7000-2350 BC Combined Weight: 25.76gms

White flint Possible debitage. Sub-triangular chip of flint with three flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect and a bulb of percussion and ripples on its ventral side. Grey flint Possible debitage; the finder asserts flint does not naturally occur in the area of findspot. The colour and the fractured appearance of one end may alternatively hint that this flint has been fractured by heating. Suggested date: Unknown, Neolithic to Bronze Age, 3500-800 BC. Length: 13.6mm, Width: 12.9mm, Thickness: 6.9mm, Weight: 1.47gms.

Pale grey flint debitage. Seven small chips, all probably waste from flint knapping using hard hammer with narrow or parallel flakes struck from their dorsal sides and with flat, concave or undulating ventral surfaces, some with bulbs. A pale milky patina on all but one chips may suggest they were subsequently exposed for a limited period to a calcareous environment; not, however, to the more marked degree typical of most other flint reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Neolithic, 7000-2350 BC Combined Weight: 8.96gms

Fire-cracked flint. A small fragment of patinated flint with the characteristically jagged and hackled surface and deep cracking associated ith intense heat - though it is noted that such effects were wont to occur in recent times, when the burning of stubble was a common agricultural practice. However, this object is accompanied by prehistoric flints, whose date range is advanced for it here, with a later extension offered in precautionary vein. A flint knife of unknown date, Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a secondary flake of grey flint with some cortex on the dorsal face. It is broadly D shaped in plan. The distal end and right side have invasive, low-angle, sub-parallel retouch to form a cutting edge. There are some abrupt removals on the left side, perhaps to back the edge of the tool. The flint is 34.8mm long, 28.5mm wide and 10.6mm thick. 11.7g.

Dark grey flint with cortex pebble, possible plough pebble. Over half of a water-rounded flint cobble with a single flat face which is rounded at its edges, smoothed, and bears unidirectional scoring. The finder kindly suggests a role as a sharpener. Dr Kevin Leahy regards these objects as plough pebbles, which would be mounted on the leading edge of the wooden mould board to reduce its erosion during use, the markings on the protruding ‘working’ face of the pebble arising from long use until its displacement. The heavy plough was an introduction of later Iron Age to Early …

Dark brown flint nodule with cortex, scraper. A round flint pebble or nodule of high quality, with invasive angled scalar retouch which has removed eight large long and mostly parallel flakes in an episode of skilled and perfunctory working from a single direction. The cutting edge produced has seen some use as evidenced by its light battering. The rapid removal of larger flakes might usually suggest a late date; however, the selection of this material, which is imported to the area, might rather point to an earlier date and to its economical rather than haphazard working. The notable …

Pale grey flint with cortex, cobble. A fragment of a nodule trimmed to rectangular form by hard hammer strike. This would be apt to use in building or road-mending, which were possibly agencies contributing to the importation of the wealth of patinated flint reported from the vicinity. The struck surfaces are misted but not as highly patinated as much of that material.
