Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic Axe/Adze Roughout, measuring 155 x 75 x 29mm. It has been made on a thin oval tabular nodule of brownish grey flint, with areas of weathered cortex on both faces. The roughout has been prepared by bifacial shallow flaking around the whole perimeter. In profile it is curved, with a boss of flint protruding from the convex face, perhaps preventing further flaking and leading to its abandonment. After further shaping, it would probably be finished by grinding and polishing. It dates from 4000-2300 BC.

Neolithic scraper (with additional retouch). Dimensions 53 x 23 x 10mm. Made on a blade-like flake of dark brown flint. Both lateral edges and the distal end have rather coarse steep retouch and show signs of wear. The flake has been hard hammer struck and the proximal end has damage indicating that several blows had been necessary to separate it.

Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)

3 Mesolithic/ Early Neolithic blades. Two are narrow, with parallel edges, a little over 45mm in length (both appear to have lost one end). The one with an intact proximal end has a heavily abraded platform. They are in a pale brownish grey flint, unpatinated. The third is broader and in a glossy dark brown flint. It has an abraded platform and in probably hard hammer struck. Mesolithic - Early Neolithic c.7000 - c.3000 BC

Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, barbed and tanged arrowhead. 41 x 18 x 4mm. Long narrow type (Green’s Sutton C) with long tang and prominent barbs (one broken). Laural leaf shaped implement in an unpatinated glossy brown flint, with minor break at the distal tip. The dorsal face has invasive shallow flaking along the right edge, while the left half retains the dorsal surface of the flake blank with only minor retouch at the edge. The ventral face has invasive shallow flaking which thins the bulbar area and extends half way up the right side. The left edge is retouched by shallow flaking up to the break while the right distal edge has some minor recent damage.

Three spherical flint nodules, each with numerous pock marks suggesting their possible use as hammer stones. The largest measures 81.47mm in diameter, the second measures 69.29mm in diameter, and the smallest measures 45.83mm in diameter. The smallest weighs 130.32g, the larger two are too heavy for the scales. If used as hammer stones these examples would date to the later prehistoric period, from the Neolithic to Iron Age.

A plano-convex flint knife. Length 57mm. This leaf-shaped example is made on a flake of brown flint, the ventral face of which is unaltered, apart from some recent minor edge chips; the dorsal face is completely pressure flaked from both lateral edges, giving a fine fluted surface. All original surfaces are irregularly patinated buff. Plano-convex knives are characteristic tools of the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age (Beaker Period) 3000-1500 BC.
