Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lithic implement; a flint annular ring which probably dates from the 19th or early 20th century. It is made of opaque tan flint and has scalar retouch. It weighs about 2g. This object has been identified by Hazel Martingel and is probably a rare survivor of the work of flint knappers during the early part of the 20th century. They were originally called 'fakes' but later 'replicas'. Bill Basham was one such flint knapper who made a flint necklace of rings very like this one. He also made a Flint alphabet! At the time, gunflints were made in Brandon in Suffolk and some of the skill…

A lithic implement; a flint barbed and tanged arrowhead probably dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (2500 BC - 1500 BC). It has invasive working with scalar retouch and has a squared tang and rounded barbs. According to Butler (in Prehistoric Flintwork, page 164) it can be classed as a Sutton type arrowhead, one of the non-fancy barbed and tanged types. It weighs about 2g. The object was found in the same place as SWYOR-95AB74 which has been identified as a 19th or 20th century object. Flint knappers of this period such as Edward Simpson and Bill Basham were ver…

A flint tool; a denticulared blade dating from the Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic period. It is 54.3mm long, 23.3mm wide and 6mm thick. It is oval in plan. The blade is a tertiary flake which is worked on the left edge into two deep notches or denticulats with abrupt retouch. The right edge is backed. This tool was probably used like a saw. The flint is mid brown and opaque with a large white inclusion on the ventral face. A similar example can be seen on page 110 of Prehistoric Flintwork by Chris Butler.

A barbed and tanged arrow head dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age period, c.2500BC - 1500BC. The flint is mottled white/grey in colour and is hardly patinated. The ends of the barbs have snapped off and are missing, making it difficult to assign to a type. The tang is triangular. It has a length of 25.67mm, width 17.66mm, thickness 3.55mm, weight 1.18g. The arrowhead was manufactured using pressure flaking invasive retouch which covers both faces. This suggests that the arrowhead was well made and may have been a fancy type. For reference see Butler 2005. Prehistoric F…
