Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kirklees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic polished flint axe. The axe is 152.2mm long, 62.6mm wide and 28mm thick. It weighs 338g. The axe is a tapering sub-rectangular shape and is ovoid in section with a flat facet at each end of the oval. The curved cutting edge is in good condition but there is some damage to the narrow end and a little of the end is missing. The damage at the haft end appears to be post depositional, but is not very recent, as the break is patinated. The axe patination in general is variable, the variations in colour being difference in patination rather than differences in the stone. The axe…

Large flint scraper dating to the early Neolithic period (3500-2100 BC). The scraper is roughly oval in shape with a thickened butt and thin distal end. The scraper has some limited retouch on the right dorsal (upper) surface and a small patch of retouch on the left ventral (lower) surface. The ventral face has a pronounced bulb of percussion where the flake has been struck from the core. The flint is pale grey in colour; it weighs 27.9g and measures 61.3mm in length, 43.8mm in width and 11.9mm in thickness.

County: Kirklees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint blade, possibly late Mesolithic (6500-3500 BC). The blade is rectangular in shape with a double dorsal ridge. On the dorsal (upper) face, about half the blade has the flint cortex intact. The left dorsal edge displays some fine edge damage indicating that it has been used; there is a small notch where a spawl has been removed, probably unintentionally during use. The blade weighs 4.8g and measures 40.4mm in length, 18.5mm in width and 4.4mm in thickness.
