Record ID: GAT-818764
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint found together. The first is likely to be imported flint and represents a flake from tool production. It is broken and the break is heavily patenated suggesting the break is ancient. It is possible that the flake represents a distal scraper snapped off in use. Later neolithic. The second piece is an irregular pebble, no sign of deliberate working, probably glacial deposition. Natural.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Seven (7) knapped flint blades of later Mesolithic date (6500 - 4000 BC). All the blades are broadly sub-rectangular in plan (having curved / convex and concave long edges) and are sub-rectangular or sub-triangular in cross section. Many stages of core development are present within this small assemblage; some blades have small areas of cortex (outer flint rind) present whilst others do not. The presence of the cortex usually indicates that the flake has been struck in the earlier knapping phases of the core. Some of the blades have been deliberately snapped, whilst others are complet…

Four (4) knapped flint blades of later Mesolithic date (6500 - 4000 BC). The blades are best described as primary debitage related to core preparation. All four blades are broadly sub-rectangular in plan (having curved / convex and concave long edges) and are sub-rectangular or sub-triangular in cross section. All have at least 50% cortex (outer flint rind) present which indicate that they are amongst the first flakes / blades to be struck from a core when working / knapping faces are being prepared. None of the flakes are retouched and it is likely that they were discarded soon after…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Multi faceted core which has been worked in several to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a considerable area of outer cortex (40 - 50%) is present on one face. The fragment is heavily worn and the remains of at least one striking platform is present from which blades have been removed. From what remains it would seem that a flaw was present within this end of a larger water worn flint pebble and that once the usable flint had been removed the core was rejected and discarded. There is no ev…

Three (3) pieces of worked flint blade, probably of Mesolithic date (6500-4500BC). These three blades are irregular in form and may represent trimming and reworking of different cores. All are tertiary flakes, with no cortex associated with them. Two show working in two separate directions suggesting that they come from a core which is rejuvenated and then reworked. Waste similar to this was often discarded and can be seen as diagnostic evidence of flint working on site. None of the flakes are retouched / reworked. They are all formed from a grey coloured flint with a white surface pa…

Large flint flake probably imported material. Although an evocative shape, it is not a tool, the facets are deemed to be the result of natural fracturing; ie not worked.

Record ID: GAT-9211A0
Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Orange-brown-coloured flint blade, with a minimum of three earlier blade removals visible on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral face, as are ripples running conversely across the length of this face. It has been truncated at the point of percussion: this is known to have taken place since it was found, roughly 20 years ago. Similarly, there may be some retouch along the edges of the blade, although this may have also been caused by damage since its discovery.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Broken waste flake found in eroding field edge. The mid-brown flint flake retains some cortex within the striking platform but was not the primary flake struck from the core – at least two earlier removals are visible on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible to the proximal end of the ventral face and a smaller bulb scar can be seen within this. There are a number of other angular fractures also visible to this end, possibly a result of hinge or step terminations to other flake removals, or perhaps as a result of natural causes. The flake has been truncated c. 18…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Waste greyish-brown secondary flake with a pronounced dorsal ridge and which retains some cortex to the distal end. The ventral face shows a small bulb scar at the distal end whilst ripples emanate from the striking platform at the proximal end suggesting that the core from which it was taken was struck from either end during preparation. A number of other flake removals are evident on both faces. There appears to be some possible fine retouch along the edges.

Black chert blade with evidence for earlier removals from the core on the dorsal face. One side has a smooth wide cleavage plane emanating from the striking platform which appears to have been struck a second time in an attempt to thin the butt. Some retouch is evident.
