Record ID: BH-68EFD2
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint axehead of Neolithic date. The bifacially worked axe is complete, its heavily weathered surface displaying only one small area of post-depositional damage. From the rounded top end the straight sides flare towards the cutting edge, which is also convex. The axehead is of lenticular section, the highest point being a central ridge, from which radiate a series of narrow flake removal scars. One side of the axe retains just under half of its original cortex. The artefact measures 91.7mm long, up to 41.2mm wide and 23.1mm thick. The weight is 103g.

Approximately one half of an ovate handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date (c.-500,000 to -180,000). The implement has been shaped on both convex sides by the removal of transverse flakes. There is also some evidence for retouching around the edges. It has been broken transversely across the middle, probably during antiquity. The flint is yellowish-orange in colour and is heavily weathered. It measures 77mm long by 75.8mm wide and weighs 143.04g. The thickest part is at the centre where it is 21.7mm. It tapers in thickness towards the narrow end. It was found in close proximity to a stream…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flint blade of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date (-4500, or 4500BC). Struck using soft hammer or indirect percussion. Upper surface has striking platform and three or four flake removal scars. Reverse shows bulb of percussion and rippling from blow. Edges show some signs of wear, which indicate that it was used as a tool (ie. it is not a waste flake). Colour is light grey and has been subject to some weathering, although the edges are still fairly sharp. Measures 50.3mm long, 13.6mm wide and 2.5mm thick. Weight = 2.39g.

Polished flint axe of Neolithic date (c.4,000 to 2,000). Light grey flint and highly polished, with some small flake removal scars around the edges. The only damage is to the haft end, where a small area has been struck off, probably by the plough. Otherwise the object is a fine example of the type, with a sharp blade and flattened ground edges on its long sides. It is 153.4mm in length and 63.3mm wide at the blade end and 36.8mm wide at the rear end. The maximum thickness is 34.3mm and it weighs 425g.

Barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of early Bronze Age date (2150-1500 BC). The object is incomplete, the point having been broken off. It is slender in appearance, with shallow barbs, and has been finely worked all over. The surfaces have white to light grey surface patination. It measures 32.8mm long by 14.8mm wide at the widest point, and 4.8mm thick. The tang is 9.6mm long by 5.3mm wide. It weighs 2.09g.

Part Polished Flint Axe. Elongated, sub-trapezoidal plan with a thin lenticular cross section, of unpatinated black flint with a few paler, coarse inclusions, these inclusions have been worked confidently and have not caused any flakes to terminate in hinges. The cutting edge is the widest point, both lateral edges are left as knapped and are not abraded to aid with hafting, the sides narrow gently to a thin narrow butt. The ground and polished surfaces are confined to the cutting edge and the immediate high points of the flake scars, the remaining surfaces are invasively kn…

Part of a flint handaxe of probable Lower Palaeolithic (c. 800,000 - c. 250,000 BC) date. The light greyish-brown flint is partially patinated. A darker, mid-orange fossil band extends transversely across the axe, at the point of the break, and may in fact be the cause of the damage. The surviving piece is semioval, with a pointed-oval section. The tool is bifacially worked, the flaking being covering, scalar and of low angle. In addition to the original working, a narrow blade scar cuts through the surface patination. This scar, which is aligned transversely and located adjacent t…

A tertiary flint blade of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 2700 BC - c. 1600 BC). The blade appears to be missing its distal end. Part of the core platform survives at the proximal end, with a pronounced bulb of percussion and conchoidal fracture, indicative of hard hammer percussion. The piece has a triangular section and a slightly 'bowed' appearance, with serrated edges, which may be coarse retouch or, alternatively, the result of wear. The flint is unpatinated, translucent grey. Length: 28mm; width: 13.9mm; thickness: 5.8mm. Weight: 2.38g.

A flint 'leaf' arrowhead, dating from the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. The piece is pear-shaped and bifacially worked from a tertiary flake. Retouch is covering, scaled and low angle. The flint is a translucent light brown at the base, with a light grey patination to the upper half. There is a small amount of damage to one of the edges, just above the halfway point. Length: 27.1 mm; width: 16.1 mm; thickness: 3.3 mm. Weight: 1.25 g.

A flint blade core made from a Neolithic polished axe. Two vertical strips of the polished axe surface remain, including one which extends around one of the narrow edges, providing an indication of the original form. The rest of the surface has been removed by the striking of five broad blades. The piece is oval in section and contains a large flaw, which may be the reason for the axe having been abandoned. The surface of the flint is a heavily patinated light grey colour. Dimensions: 74.1mm long, 42.9mm wide, 29.6mm thick. Weight: 104.69.

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint tranchet adze of probable Mesolithic date. The implement is parallel-sided along most of its length, slightly tapering at the top. The adze is of pointed-oval section, the height being significantly greater above the level of the edges than below it. On either side of the axe the flake removal scars angle downwards from the broad, roughly defined central ridge. The removal of the transverse sharpening flake has created a steep, wedge-like blade. A similar flake has also been removed from the top end of the adze. The surface of the flint is mottled, light grey to creamy-whit…
