Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint axe of Neolithic date. The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, tapering only slightly towards the rounded butt. It is pointed oval in section, the greatest thickness being at the centre point. The top half of one face and the the bottom part of the opposite face show that the flint surface was originally polished smooth. The fact that the remainder of the surfaces are lower than these smooth areas and show numerous flake removal scars suggests that the axe was re-worked at some point in its life. The flint is a heavily patinated mottled creamy-grey colour. The implement meas…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint handaxe of probable lower Palaeolithic date. This tool was identified and recorded from photographs, making exact identification uncertain. However, the form is consistent with an Acheulian Flat-butted or 'Bout Coupé' handaxe (see J. Wymer; 1968; pp. 45-68). In plan, the tool is sub-triangular, having a roughly horizontal bottom edge and extending to a point at the top. All three sides are slightly convex and the corners are rounded rather than sharp in nature. No side view was available to the recorder but the surfaces of the bi-facially worked tool appear to be slightly c…

A probable early Neolithic Crested flint blade (see C. Butler; 2005; pp. 120, no. 8 for similar). The blade has been struck from a large elongated flint flake with a pronounced curvature. A central vertical ridge extends the length of the implement. There are flake removal scars extending downwards from this ridge and evidence of fine re-touch along all but the bottom edge. Close to the narrower top end are at least three deliberately created notches. The bulb-of-percussion is clearly visible at the top of the reverse side. The tool has been made from a broad flake and has a convex scraping edge, parallel vertical sides and a horizontal bottom edge. A re-touched flint flake tool of probable late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The tool has been made from a broad flake. At the proximal end is a wide portion of the core platform. A bulb-of-percussion is located at the centre of the ventral surface, at the platform end and there is associated rippling. The dorsal surface exhibits a single, angled arrise. One of the flint's long sides is vertical and appears to have been serrated. The remainder of the sides are convex. The main area of re-touch is confined to the area just above the proximal end. On the ventral surface is an ar…

An incomplete flint ovate handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic (c. 500,0000BP-c. 40,000BP) date. Wymer (1968, p. 57) suggests that the majority of ovate handaxes belong to the Late Middle Acheulian Industries. Approximatley half of the tool survives. It has convex sides and narrows towards the intact cutting edge. The tool has been bi-facially worked to create a pointed-oval profile. The surfaces display a series of broad flake removal scars which angle downwards from the centre. In addition to the broad flakes a number of narrower, blade-like flakes have been removed to help form the edge…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Mesolithic knapped flint flake, probably a core rejuvination flake. The ventral surface has impact ripples along its length, until approximately half way where there is a step termination across the flake. The dorsal surface has four parallel ridges where bladelets or flakes have been removed. The distal end is curved, however there is no evidence for retouch. it is 36.39mm long, 31.64mm wide, 12.01mm thick and weighs 14.59 grams.

Mesolithic to Neolithic knapped flint waste flake. There is possible platform preparation at the proximal end. The ventral surface has narrow impact ripples along its length. There is a central ridge on the dorsal surface. There is possible retouch along both edges. It is 41.13mm long, 21.63mm wide, 6.49mm thick and weighs 8.16 grams.

A flint end scraper of probable Early Neolithic date. The tool has been made from a thick flake and is sub-oval in plan. Extending vertically down the centre of the dorsal surface is a broad flake removal, flanked on either side by a strip of cortex. At the distal end is convex scraping edge displaying evidence of abrupt retouch. On the ventral surface is conchoidal fracture comprising a bulb-of-percussion and associated ripples. The flint is lightly patinated, mottled dark and light grey. The tool measures 56.1mm long, 42.6mm wide and 15.5mm thick. The weight is…

A notched flint flake/'Y-shaped' tool of probable early Neolithic date. The tool has been made from a roughly semi-circular flake which has had one corner removed to create a deep, broad notch. Apart from the notch, retouch is confined to the opposite end of the dorsal surface, where there is a point with adjacent small flake removals. This point is located at roughly the same place as the bulb-of-percussion, the majority of which has been removed on the ventral surface. The flint is dark grey in colour and only slightly patinated. The tool measures 52.9mm long, 30mm wide …
