Two incomplete flint blades, probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic periods. Both pieces are sub-rectangular in plan, of triangular section and display no signs of having been used as tools. The larger blade retains part of its core platform, beneath which is a bulb-of-percussion; the smaller blade has a bulb-of-percussion, with clear rippling below. The larger piece is heavily patinated, with a mottled greyish-blue surface, while the other is less heavily patinated, with mid-grey flint containing lighter inclusions. Both blades appear to have been broken off at…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date. The rounded scraper is on a tertiary flake and is sub-oval in plan, with possible damage at the proximal end, where there is a portion of the striking platform and adjacent bulb-of-percussion. Retouch is clearest at the distal end and is long, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt; it seems likely that right- and left-hand sides also have short, abrupt retouch. The flint surface is a heavily recorticated, mottled white which is indicative of deposition within an alkaline environment. Length: 53.2mm; width: 35mm; thickness: 11.4mm. Weight: 21.54g.

A Neolithic flaked flint axehead. The bifacially worked tool is of pointed-oval cross section and has straight sides which flare towards the rounded cutting edge. Apart from a small area of cortex, located at the butt, the surface is covered by broad, sub-parallel flake removal scars which extend downwards from the diffuse central ridges. A flint flake from the cutting end of a Neolithic flaked axehead. The piece represents most of the convex cutting end of the tool. One broad and two narrow flake removal scars are visible on the dorsal surface. The concave reverse of the piece displays no ripples, but the low bulb-of-percussion and scar at one end of the flake suggest this was a deliberate, contemporary removal, probably for sharpening purposes. In addition, a second, blade like, removal scar extends along the bottom, following the curvature of the cutting edge. The grey flint has a lightly weathered surface. Le…
