Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of seven flint waste flakes, some possibly showing signs of abrupt retouch. The forms of the pieces vary considerably, but most are sub-oval in plan, have a pronounced bulb-of-percussion and associated rippling. The colour of the flint varies from dark brown to light grey, with varying levels of patination. The total weight of the assemblage is 146.57g. The suggested date for these flakes is Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, based on their forms, levels of patination and the presence within the assemblage of more diagonostic tool forms.

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint saddle quern of probable Neolithic date. The artefact is roughly pointed-oval in plan and has been formed from a split flint nodule. The upper face of the quern is slightly concave, with a textured surface probably achieved through repeated striking with a pointed implement. This working extends across all of the exposed area, although in certain areas - particularly the central portion and at the narrower, more pointed end, but also in a thin band around most of the perimeter - the grinding process has created a smooth, polished surface. The underside of the quern retains m…

A flint blade core, probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic periods. The core has a hexagonal platform at the top. The majority of the narrow blade scars extend vertically downwards, the only exception being at the base, where a single scar cuts across at a right-angle, creating a wedge-shaped bottom. The surfaces of the core are heavily patinated. The object measures 57.7mm long, up to 34.8mm wide and 22.3mm thick. The weight is 57.8g.

An incomplete re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic date. This small, thin flake appears to have been removed from a core or tool and the edge re-touched to turn it into a blade. The flake is irregular in plan and has a large and possibly deliberately cut notch. The bulb-of-percussion can be clearly seen on the ventral face, while the dorsal surface has three or four narrow flake removal scars. The proximal end of the flake has been finely re-touched on the ventral face, creating a convex cutting edge. The distal end is roughly horizontal, the tool having been broken at …

A flint scraper of Neolithic date. The general form and size of the flake suggests that it probably dates from the early part of the period. The implement has been made from a broad, thick flake which has developed a heavily patinated whitish-grey surface. The object has roughly parallel vertical sides, a rounded proximal end and an irregular distal end. The dorsal surface exhibits two main arrises, which may have resulted from the removal of flakes or, alternatively, may be the result of thermal fracture. The majority of retouch has been executed on the convex proximal edge, but th…

A flint End scraper of probable early Neolithic date. The tool has been manufactured from a broad, short flake of roughly semi-circular form. The surface of the dark grey flint has is a heavily patinated blueish-white colour. At the proximal end is a wide area of core platform. The ventral surface is roughly flat at the proximal end and slopes downwards to the convex distal end. Approximately three quarters of the convex scraping edge has been finely re-touched. In the area between this scraping edge and the platform is a jagged protrusion which retains cortex. On the ventral face …

A flint blade tool of probable early Neolithic date. The tool has been made from a long sub-rectangular flake of dark greyish-brown flint. The flake is roughly trapeziodal in section, the dorsal surface having a narrow central ridge which is possibly the result of an earlier narrow blade removal. Cortex remains at the wide distal end and half way down one of the vertical edges. Re-touch is confined to the other vertical edge and consists of a deep notch above a serrated convex area. On the ventral surface, the bulb-of-percussion has been removed but ripples are visible. The tool …

A re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic date. At the proximal end of the tool are what appears to be the remannts of two adjacent core platforms. From the base of these platforms the sides angle gradually downwards, terminating in a short horizontal edge. The dorsal surface is wide and flat, with a single arrise on each side; the ventral surface has a clearly defined bulb-of-percussion and ripples. Re-touching has been carried out on both sub-vertical sides and on the short vertical side at the distal end. The flint is mid brown in colour and has little patination. Th…

A flint core of probable late Neolithic date. The core is large and of rough appearance. The flint itself, which is mottled grey in colour, contains natural flaws and is generally of poor quality. At the top is a platform and the scars extending downwards from here suggest that it was used for the manufacture of short, broad flakes. The object measures 60.7mm high, 52mm wide and weighs 197.73g.

A flint axe of Neolithic date. This piece is best categorised as a 'roughout', the surfaces still retaining some original cortex. The most likely explanation is that it was discarded prior to finishing, possibly due to flaws in the flint, but more likely because of the accidental removal of too large a flake (see below). The axe is an elongated sub-oval shape in plan and is of pointed oval section. It has been roughly formed through the removal of a number of broad flakes which generally radiate outwards from the central ridge. One of the convex vertical edges has been subject to a …

A large and irregular flint core tool of probable late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The tool is sub-rectangular in plan and appears to have been manaufactured from a modified single-platform core. The platform is irregular in shape but appears to have evidence for preparation, in the form of a long, thin bladelet type scar, fine re-touch and possible evidence for grinding. Apart from an angled corner, the ventral surface is flat and has a clear bulb-of-percussion and ripples emanating from the proximal (platform) end. The convex dorsal surface has been formed by two strikes c…

The flint itself, which is mottled brownish-grey in colour, contains natural flaws and is generally of poor quality. At the top is a small and irregular platform and the scars extending downwards from here suggest that it was used for the manufacture of short, broad flakes. A flint tool - probably a core rejuvination flake tool - of probable late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The tool is sub-rectangular in plan and of trapezoidal section. The dorsal side has four surfaces which represent flake removal scars from the production of narrow blades; the remaining face retains the original flint cortex. The ventral surface has a clear bulb-of-percussion and ripples. At the proximal end is a small portion of the original core platform. The distal end has been deliberately flattened through fine re-touch, creating a narrow scraping edge. The flint is a m…

A retouched flint flake of probable early Neolithic date. The tool is irregular in plan and of trapezoidal section. A notch has been cut into one of the roughly vertical sides and there is a limited amount of retouch to the other edges. A small portion of the core platform survives and a diffuse bulb-of-percussion and ripples are visible on the ventral side. The flint is a lightly patinated brownish-grey colour. The tool measures 35.9mm long, 15.7mm wide and 7.5mm thick. The weight is 4.1g.
