Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT

A flint axe of Neolithic date. The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, tapering only slightly towards the rounded butt. It is pointed oval in section, the greatest thickness being at the centre point. The top half of one face and the the bottom part of the opposite face show that the flint surface was originally polished smooth. The fact that the remainder of the surfaces are lower than these smooth areas and show numerous flake removal scars suggests that the axe was re-worked at some point in its life. The flint is a heavily patinated mottled creamy-grey colour. The implement meas…

A flint handaxe of probable lower Palaeolithic date. This tool was identified and recorded from photographs, making exact identification uncertain. However, the form is consistent with an Acheulian Flat-butted or 'Bout Coupé' handaxe (see J. Wymer; 1968; pp. 45-68). In plan, the tool is sub-triangular, having a roughly horizontal bottom edge and extending to a point at the top. All three sides are slightly convex and the corners are rounded rather than sharp in nature. No side view was available to the recorder but the surfaces of the bi-facially worked tool appear to be slightly c…

Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. Small example (length 24mm),flanked all over on one face but with a small central area of original flake blank on the other. Tip is blunted by impact fracture. One barb is slightly shorter than the other, possibly a minor break. ‘Green’s Sutton Type’. Beaker period.

A probable early Neolithic Crested flint blade (see C. Butler; 2005; pp. 120, no. 8 for similar). The blade has been struck from a large elongated flint flake with a pronounced curvature. A central vertical ridge extends the length of the implement. There are flake removal scars extending downwards from this ridge and evidence of fine re-touch along all but the bottom edge. Close to the narrower top end are at least three deliberately created notches. The bulb-of-percussion is clearly visible at the top of the reverse side. The implement measures 68.83mm long, 23.78mm wide and 1…

A flint flake of probable prehistoric date. The piece is sub-trapezoidal in plan, with a pronounced bulb-of-percussion on the reverse. One of the horizontal edges shows signs of possible re-touch. The flint is dark grey in colour and a small section of the original cortex remains. The object measures 57.75mm wide, 34.3mm high and 9.47mm thick. The weight is 20.46g.

A flint End and side scraper of probable early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The implement has been made from a large irregular flake of sub-triangular form. The dorsal side has a pronounced central ridge, which has been formed by the removal of broad flakes. The right hand side of the tool (as you look at it) has an area of invasive re-touch half way up, and just below half way down the left hand side is a deliberately cut notch. The wide horizontal edge has a limited amount of re-touch also. Some cortex remains along the edges. …

A flint End and side scraper of probable early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The implement has been made from a sub-triangular flake. The dorsal side has a several parallel arrises, indicating that it may have come from a narrow blade core. The left hand side of the tool (as you look at it) has an area of invasive re-touch half way up and the broad horizontal edge displays several long, narrow re-touch scars. On the ventral side, the bulb-of percussion has been removed, but the nature of the ripples suggest that it would have been…

A good example of a flint End and side scraper of early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The tool has been made from a broad flake and has a convex scraping edge, parallel vertical sides and a horizontal bottom edge. The flake removal scars on the dorsal surface suggest the flake came from a broad blade core, the horizontal edge probably being part of the original core platform. The re-touching is concentrated on the convex top edge but there is also (mostly non-invasive) re-touch to the right hand vertical edge (as you look at it); …

A flint Core scraper of probable early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The implement has been made from an irregular flint nodule and retains much of the original cortex. The broad end was originally used as a core for the production of short and fairly narrow blades. The convex bottom edge has been retouched, although it is not clear whether this was for the purposes of platform preparation or for later conversion to a scraper. The narrower end of the artefact also displays narrow, blade-like flake removal scars and there is also p…

An assemblage of five flint cores of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. Four of the cores are probably early Neolithic in date and are single-platform cores; the remaining core, no. 32 (see photograph), is bi-polar and dates from the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic. The cores are of varying sizes and forms and all are fairly rough in appearance. Nos. 29 and 33 have flat core platforms and numerous parallel flake removal scars, which indicate the production of long, thin blades. Nos. 30 and 31 are similar in …

Seven of the pieces (nos. 37, 38, 39, 41, 43, 44 and 46) are categorised as re-touched flakes. Most are sub-oval to sub-rectangular in plan, have vertical arrises and blade removal scars on the dorsal surfaces, plus a limited amount of mostly non-invasive re-touch to one edge. No. 44 has a deliberately serrated vertical edge, possibly indicating that it performed a saw-like function; no. 38 has a cut notch, as does no. 46. The …

A flint core rejuvination flake tool of probable early to middle Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The flint is irregular in shape. A flint flake tool, possibly made from a core rejuvination flake. Probably dates from the early Neolithic period. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. One side of the dorsal surface has two flake removal scars, one of which is very broad and one narrower. These flake scars are aligned transverse to the sub-rectangular tool and are probably flake scars from the original core surface. The other side of the dorsal surface is probably part of the core platform. All sides have been re-touched, the main area of working being along one of the vertical edges. O…

A flint End scraper of probable early Neolithic date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The tool has been made from a large, irregular flake. At the proximal end is an unworked projection which may have been intentionally left in place to make the tool easier to hold when in use. An assemblage of twenty flint blades. Nineteen of the blades are of early to middle Neolithic date; the remaining blade (no. 26) is probable late Mesolithic. These pieces are part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The Neolithic blades are of varying forms but are mostly parallel sided or converge slightly at one end. The dorsal surfaces generally exhibit three or four parallel flake removal scars, creating a trapezoidal profile. Most of the blades have serrated edges, which may be the result of re-touch, but is more likely (except, perhaps, in the case of…

A flint microlith of probable late Mesolithic date. Microliths were probably early forms of arrowhead, several being hafted to produce the arrow. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The tool is sub-rectangular in plan and of semi-circular section. The bottom edge, which would have been fitted into the arrow shaft, has been invasively re-touched, creating a blunt face.
