A flint borer of probable Bronze Age date. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The tool is crudely made and irregular in form. It is of sub-triangular section and tapers to a point at the end. The flake removal scars are multi-directional. The flint is mid grey in colour. The artefact measures 95.5mm long, 26.4mm wide and 23.7mm thick. It weighs 44.45g. *See also: BH-D7D6B1, BH-D80626, BH-D85097, BH-2C8256, BH-2DC9D5, BH-2E2601, BH-2E5412, BH-2E7BB6, BH-2EA041, BH-2EB740, BH-2ECED3, BH-2F2323, BH-2F74C0, BH-2FA0C8, BH-2FCA68, BH-2FEC65, BH-301025…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date. The rounded scraper is on a tertiary flake and is sub-oval in plan, with possible damage at the proximal end, where there is a portion of the striking platform and adjacent bulb-of-percussion. Retouch is clearest at the distal end and is long, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt; it seems likely that right- and left-hand sides also have short, abrupt retouch. The flint surface is a heavily recorticated, mottled white which is indicative of deposition within an alkaline environment. Length: 53.2mm; width: 35mm; thickness: 11.4mm. Weight: 21.54g.

A flint scraper of probable Mid Bronze Age to Early Iron Age date (c. 1601 - 401 BC). The tool is suboval in plan and irregular in section. This is a secondary flake, the striking platform covered with cortex, indicating that the tool has been made from a natural nodule or roughly worked core. The lack of arrises on the dorsal surface also attests to this fact. Retouch has occurred at the rounded distal end, continuing to approximately halfway down the left-hand mesial edge, and is long, abrupt and scaled. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a white surface.…

A flint end scraper, probably dating from the Bronze Age (c. 2350 - 801 BC). The tool is on a tertiary flake, is truncated-oval in plan and of broadly trapezoidal cross section. A flat area at the proximal end probably represents part of the striking platform. A concave area below this, on the ventral surface, may be a large bulbar scar. Retouch at the rounded distal end is short and abrupt. The exposed surface of the flint is white due to deposition in alkaline soil. Length: 32.7mm; width: 30.9mm; thickness: 9.1mm. Weight: 9.07g.
