Record ID: GAT-1EE1D2
Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint core, probably Neolithic, from a small nodule of flint. Cortex is present on two sides of the core, and several blade removals are visible. The flint is dark grey in colour, and has been chipped on every angle, presumably from the action of knocking against pebbles on the stony beach at Porth Dinllaen. Nodules of flint were brought to this area from elsewhere. Therefore this core is probably Neolithic (as opposed to Mesolithic) in date, because items were more likely to have been transported around at this time. However the possibility that the core is Mesolithic should…

Record ID: GAT-4776E5
Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Notched/Spurred piece Made on an irregularly fractured fragment of poor quality light grey cherty flint, 34mm long, 35mm wide and 12mm thick. A notch has been created on one edge by a single steep flake removal. The inside of the notch has then been shaped by fine retouch. There are no visible signs of use wear in the notch. Removal of the notch has also created a ‘spur’ at one side which has some possible use edge chipping. This is rather irregular and not really a good diagnostic piece on its own but both notched and spurred pieces are typically found in Late Neolithic asse…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric flint flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. The flake is a mixture of light and dark reddish browns in colour. There is evidence of the cortex along one edge. The flake is retouched, with apparent earlier blade/flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is visible, although it is difficult to identify any concentric waves along the ventral face which may indicate it is of natural origin. There is a small chip just below the bulb of percussion which suggests it is anthropogenic and as such this is probably a retouched flake (Shopl…

County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric core trimming flake. The find is roughly triangular with a white, yet heavily worn patina. This would indicate that the find has been exposed for some time, likely eroding out of the soil. The flint is truncated at the distal end and probably would have originally extended to a point. The flake has a visible bulb of percussion.
