A large crude Neolithic lithic implement, possible a rough out for a scraper.  The flint is roughly oval in overall shape, but has been irregularly shaped, by the knapping process. It has been formed from a light greyish-brown flint. The bulb of percussion and striking platform both survive and the ripples of percussion are evident. The retouch is shallow and crude.

A flint scraper. This example is manufactured from the naturally occuring flint deposits on the Yorkshire Wolds. The flint is of an inferior quality and is not utilised that often in the manufacture of lithic implements. This example has a white patina and a section of the cutting edge has been removed recently, no doubt by the plough.

The ventral surface is rough with ripples of percussion emanating from two different directions. The dorsal surface is irregular with numerous flakes having been removed and extensive retouch is present around the distal portion and left and right edges. A small patch of cortex has been retained. The flint is a mid brownish-grey colour with numerous small lighter inclusions. Dimensions: 31.9mm long, 27.1mm wide, 11.5…

The ventral surface is smooth with ripples of percussion radiating from the butt of the implement. The dorsal surface has had numerous flakes removed and displays negative scars and corresponding arises. Retouch is present along the distal edge and the bulb of percussion remains. The flint is a light grey colour with fairly large lighter inclusions. The implement is 34.2mm long, 29.1mm wide, 6.5mm thick and weighs 9.4g. Scrapers had many different…

A flint scraper, of early Bronze Age date, about 2150 BC - 1500 BC. The flake is almost circular and is thick and D shaped in section. Crude but invasive working has removed the bulb of percussion. The edges are retouched with abrupt removals but some cortex survives. This style of working is typical of the Early Bronze Age, especially on the Yorkshire Wolds (Jason Dodds, pers comm). The scraper is 41mm long, 37.6mm wide and 18.2mm thick. It weighs 31.34gm. It is formed on mottled light grey Wolds flint.

A complete flint disk scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The lithic sub-ovate in profile. The dorsal surface is smooth and flat due to a single large negative scar. The proximal edge retains a minor amount of cortex making this a secondary flake. The distal, left and right hand edges contain partial parallel flaking and semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is smooth and convex due to a bulb of percussion situated towards the proximal end. The flint is a dark grey with cream inclusions throughout. The cortex is a light brown in colour.

A pale cream to white flint 'pot lid' with cortex. Possibly modified to perform as a scraper by flaking along the bottom edge (as it appears in the image). There has also been an attempt to flatten the natural bulge (produced when the pot lid fracture occurred) on the dorsal side. Possibly Bronze Age (c2100 to c800 BC) but impossible to date accurately. A knapped flint scraper of Neolithic date, c. 3500-2100 BC. The scraper is complete, knapped from a secondary flake off of a larger core. In plan view, the scraper is oblong, in an elongated thumbnail shape. The side and forward edges have been pressure-flaked to form a cutting or scraping edge, with the rear edge left unmodified. In section, the scraper is trapezoidal. The flint is a honey-brown colour with grey-white nodules.

A flint discoidal scraper of Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date, about 3500 BC - 1500 BC. The scraper is formed on a broad flake of patinated yellow to tan flint of the type usually seen on the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wolds. The flake has a concave dorsal face and is oval in plan. All the edges are retouched with abrupt or semi abrupt removals.

A Neolithic or Bronze Age sub circular white flint 'pot lid' with spots of iron staining. Modified to perform as a scraper by flaking along the entire curved edge. The straight edge has been created by one large removal, possibly natural. Probably Neolithic or Bronze Age (c3500 to c800 BC) but impossible to date accurately. Modified natural 'pot lids' would have made an expedient 'quick fix' tool in an emergency. The presence of four in the same vicinity suggests a butchery site or camp. They were possibly used only while the site was occupied then discarded. See also LANCUM-03C6C2,…
