A complete Late Neolithic waste flake (tertiary debitage). The flake is sub-triangular in shape and has a twisted, flat cross-section. There is no retouch. The ventral face has a percussion scar and a large striking platform. It is wideset at the stiking platform and tapers quickly to a thin body. The flint is a translucent off white, with an internal light grey patch, indicating this is a river flint. It is 27mm long, 18mm wide and 5mm thick at platform. It weighs 1.4g.

A complete later Mesolithic (5000 - 3500 BC) flint core. The core has been worked in several directions and was used to produce small blades. The core fragmnet has been deliberately removed by a transverse blow - possibly suggesting that the extant piece was removed to regenerate the core. The flint is a dark brown black colour and there is a large area of cortex - this suggests the flint is of a good quality and is not native to the area in which it was found. The discarding of such a large piece of flint is unusal and there is no evidence of further working / retouching of the piece…

The dorsal face has a large area of cortex present suggesting that this should be claseed as secondary debitage . One of thelong edges has been reworked with neat and even scaled retouch which creates a good cutting and scraping edge. A snapped flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. Both the upper and lower edges of the blade are snapped - both have a grey coloured developed surface patina. The snapping has also removed the striking platform and bulb of percussion. The long edges have not been reworked although movement in the plough soil suggests abrupt retouch is present. The flint is relatively coarse and a mid grey mottled colour with small areas of translucent milky grey white coloured patina. The blade measures 31mm in length,…

An unusual notched snapped blade formed of mid grey mottled flint of later Mesolithic date. The blade has been deliberately snapped and the base of the slender flake survives. One edge (left hand) has a burin removal which has created a slight step. The opposite edge has a deliberately formed U shaped notch, which is reworked on both faces with neat and well formed scaled and overlapping secondary flaking. This reworking is most apparent on the dorsal face, although on the ventral the tip is thinned by parallel flaking. One long edge has a small section of cortex suggesting this was f…

Tertiary flake of debitage of Mesolithic date. The flint is a mottled grey colour and the bulb of percussion is present on the ventral face. The blade has been deliberately snapped and an irregular hinge fragment is present at one end - the mesal edges are not reworked suggesting this is a waste product / discarded flint from the third phase of knapping. A burin of later Mesolithic date formed on a snapped mid grey mottled flint blade. The bulb of percussion and striking platform have been removed by snapping although the ventral face has clear evidence of chonciodal fracturing. The proximal snapped edge has been reworked with steep sided retouch creating a projecting point. This point has been made more angular by a deliberate vertical removal that has removed a small rectangular flake giving the point a specific identifiable profile. The rectangular notch at the mid point of the blade is a modern removal from movement in the soil. T…

Flint thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a tertiary piece of debitage / waste flake which is a mottled grey black colour. The ventral face shows some conchoidal ripples and the base of the bulb of percussion. The dorsal face has multiple and layered series of flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. This has been well applied and forms a slightly serrated cutting / scraping edge. Little or no retouch is applied to the edges on the ven…

A grey / black coloured secondary debitage flake that has been reworked in one area to form a knife or scraper. The flake is broadly oval with a deliberately snapped edge. The dorsal face shows a number of multi-direction flake removals presuambly created prior to removal from the core. The ventral face has a clear bulb of percussion - this has been thinned and then the outer edge has been reworked with neat invasive retouch creating a small cutting / scraping edge. The cortex is white chalk limestone derived suggesting that this flint is of a better quality to much sourced locally. T…

Flint blade like flake of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been removed by trimming / snapping. There is no evidence of the edges being reworked - and it is this represents a piece of secondary debitage / blade removal during preparation of a new core. The blade is a mid mottled grey colour with a large piece of white cortex along one edge. It measures: 18.2mm in length, 11.1mm width, is 3.7mm thick and weighs 0.6 grams.
