A Mesolithic notched blade. The blade is sub-rectangular in shape and measures 25.44 mm long, 12.52 mm wide and 3.83 mm thick. It weighs 1.6 grams. A notch is located on the right lateral edge near to the proximal end of the blade, applied using pressure flaking from the ventral face. A further smaller notch is situated mid way up the left lateral edge, this time applied from the ventral surface. The lack of an obvious bulb of percussion suggests that the blade was snapped, and based on the even patina at the break this probably occurred in prehistory. The flint has a pale cream to gr…

A Mesolithic blade. The blade was probably a waste piece, although there is very possible retouch on the left lateral edge at the distal end. It measures 26.68 mm long, 7.53 mm long, 4.29 mm thick and weighs 0.8 grams. It is sub-triangular in section, with a central ridge which is almost parallel to the lateral edges. It is slightly convexed on the ventral face. The flint has a pale grey patina.

A Mesolithic blade. The blade was probably a waste piece, although there is some slight retouch on the left lateral edge at the proximal end. It measures 53.48 mm long, 17.21 mm wide, 9.62 mm thick and weighs 6 grams. It is sub-triangular in section, with a central ridge which is parallel to the lateral edges. A large amount of cortex remains on the dorsal face, particularly around the central ridge.  The flint is a dark grey colour with cream to white inclusions and a cream coloured cortex.

A broken Mesolithic blade. The remains of the blade measure 20.0 mm long, 11.62 mm wide, 3.14 mm thick and weighs 0.7 grams. It is trapezoidal in section. A different colour in the patina at the break suggests that the break occurred sometime after the original deposition of the flint.

A Mesolithic blade. The blade measures 23.85 mm long, 12.98 mm wide, 3.94 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. It is triangular in section. The blade appears to have been snapped at its proximal end, although based on the even patina on the flint this is an ancient break. The left lateral edge is still sharp, whilst the right edge has been blunted using retouch from the dorsal face, presumably to facilitate comfortable handling of the blade. A ridge, parallel to the lateral edges, runs down the centre of the blade. The flint is a pale cream colour.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic broken flake. The flake does not seem to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. It has been broken at some point since deposition, as the grey patina at the break differs from that on the surface of the flint which is a pale cream colour. The flake measures 25.5 mm long, 15.94 mm wide, 4.84 mm thick and weighs 2.0 grams. It is sub-triangular in section.

A Mesolithic flint implement, probably a waste flake. The flake does not seem to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. A possible notch on the left lateral edge may simply be damage. The flake measures 32.4 mm long, 10.57 mm wide, 4.25 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams. It is sub-trapezoidal in section. The flint has a pale grey to white patina.

A Mesolithic flint flake, subject to a small amount of retouch. The flake is irregularly shaped, and may have been broken. No clear bulb of percussion is visible and it is difficult to determine where the flake was struck. One edge appears to have some retouch. The flake is sub triangular in shape and trapezoidal in section. It measures 25.08 mm long, 19.71 mm wide, 4.26 mm thickand weighs 1.6 grams. It has a pale grey to pink patina.

A flint flake, judging from other material in the area it is likely to be Mesolithic. There may be some slight abrubt retouch applied from the dorsal surface on the left lateral edge. It is sub-triangular in shape and triangular in section. The flint is a white to cream colour with brown inclusions. It measures 15.31 mm long, 9.93 mm wide, 2.8 mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams.

Object type: MICROLITH

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint artefact, probably a microlith. The tool is formed from a broken bladelet. The oblique edge at the break may suggest that the bladelet was broken using the microburin technique, where the bladelet is broken down into separate parts by introducing a notch, removing the proximal end. Brown discolouration of the flint at the left edge of the ventral surface (if ventral surface is facing) may indicate burning, perhaps as part of the microlith production process. There is slight retouch along the right lateral edge (dorsal side facing) although the left edge appe…

A flint flake of Mesolithic date. The thin, brittle flake does not appear to have had further retouch applied after having been struck from the core. It measures 18.12 mm long, 8.84 mm wide, 2.64 mm thick and weighs 0.2 grams. It is sub-trapezoidal in section. The flint used is a white to pale grey in colour.

A flint flake of Mesolithic date. The flake has clear abrubt retouch along the right lateral edge. It seems the retouch was designed to blunt this edge, suggesting that the opposite edge may have been used as a cutting edge. The flint is sub-triangular in shape, and sub-triangular in section. It is 16.56 long, 9.96 wide, 3.95 thick and weighs 0.6 grams. The flint used is a cream to white colour with small black/brown inclusions.

A Mesolithic flint microlith formed from a broken bladelet, probably using the microburin technique. The microlith is triangular in shape and trapezoidal in section. There is abrubt retouch along the left lateral edge, creating a blunt edge (this edge was perhaps slotted into an organic shaft or handle). The opposite edge has some further retouch applied by pressure flaking from the dorsal surface. The butt is square. The flint ranges from pale grey/cream to a darker grey in colour. It measures 22.04 mm long, 7.47 mm wide, 2.74 mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams.

A Mesolithic flint notched flake. The flake is L shaped. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible at the butt of the flake. There is significant retouch in the angle of the 'L', applied using pressure flaking from the dorsal side, forming a deep notch. A second notch is on the left lateral edge, formed by pressure flaking from the ventral surface. The retouch on both sides makes it somewhat difficult to determine on which side the tool was hafted (presuming it was). Butler has noted how notched implements may have been used in the manufacture of and shaping of …

A Mesolithic flint microlith formed from a broken bladelet. The microlith is triangular in shape and has a flat butt formed at the break. The left lateral edge has abrubt retouch which forms a blunt edge, perhaps to facilitate slotting the point into a shaft. The right edge is naturally sharp and appears not to have been retouched. The implement is sub-trapezoidal in section. It measures 10.62 mm in length, 5.57 mm wide, 1.84 mm thick and weighs 0.1 gram. The flint is a mottled dark grey in colour.

A Mesolithic flint blade. After striking from the core the blade appears to have undergone retouch down part of its central ridge. There is also some retouch on the left corner of the butt. The flint is white to pale grey in colour. It measures 25.39 mm long, 10.8 mm wide, 5.47 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape.
