Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Published
A complete chert microlith probable scraper of Late Mesolithic date (6300-4300 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular. The dorsal surface is convex and contains six predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises. Both the proximal and distal ends have been abruptly blunted, the distal end having a cylindrical recession, probably naturally occurring within the chert, running into the body of the lithic. The left and right hand edges have fine, semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is predominantly flat with a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end.
The chert is …

A complete chert blade of Late Mesolithic date (6300-4300 BC). The lithic is sub-triangular. The dorsal surface is convex and contains four predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises and evidence of hinged flake removal within the mesial portion. Both the proximal and distal ends have been abruptly blunted. There is a minor amount of semi-abrupt retouch along the distal left hand edge. The ventral surface is slightly concave with a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end.
The chert is cream in colour. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary…

Lithic implement of likely Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithic is sub-triangular. The dorsal surface is convex and contains six predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises and evidence of hinged flake removal within the mesial portion. The proximal end has been abruptly blunted while the distal end tapers to slight point. There is a minor amount of semi-abrupt retouch along both the left and right hand edges. The ventral surface is concave with a shallow negative scar at the distal end.

Five chert blades representing debitage of of Late Mesolithic date (6300-4300 BC). The flakes have multiple negative scars with corresponding arrises. All of the flakes taper to points at the distal ends and all have a minor amount of semi-abrupt retouch. None retain any cortex. Two of the group (4 & 5 bottom middle and right) have small bulbs of percussion at the proximal end of the ventral side.
The chert ranges in colour from cream to light brown to light grey. All flakes are tertiary.

A group of two chert tools of Late Mesolithic date (6300-4300 BC).
The lithic is a micro burin and is sub-triangular. The dorsal surface contains two predominant negative scars with a single, central arrise. The proximal end has been abruptly blunted while the distal end tapers to a point. The right hand edge contains fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface contains a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end.
The chert is cream in colour. The flake retains no cortex and is therefore tertiary.

County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the Early Bronze Age, c. 2500 to 1500 BC.
The object is triangular in plan with two notches removed from one side to create the barbs and tang although on barb has broken off. The spur from the broken barb appears to have been retouched. Invasive, scaled retouch at a low angle present on both sides of the object.
The flint is mottled white and grey. The object is 19.46 mm in length 18.19 mm wide and 3.86 mm thick. The object weighs 1.0g.
