A group of four flint flakes, forming part of a larger assemblage of lithic material (see other PAS records). Given the lack of diagnostic features, the suggested date of these pieces is Mesolithic to Bronze Age. One of the flakes (no. 1) is a tertiary flake; the other three are secondary flakes. The level of recortification varies greatly, from virtually none (no. 6), to heavily recortified (no. 1). None of the flakes shows clear evidence of retouch, with the possible exception of no. 6, although the serrated edge on this piece may be the result of wear through use. All four piece…

A group of ten flint blades, forming part of a larger assemblage of lithic material (see other PAS records). Five of the blades are secondary (i.e. retaining some cortex), and the remaining five are tertiary (no cortex). Nos. 3, 14, 16, 22, 23 and 11 have been snapped at their distal ends. The lack of patination on the breaks of nos. 8, 16 and 11 suggests relatively recent damage, whereas that on the others is consistent with the overall patination of the blade, indicating that the damage occurred in antiquity. Most of the flakes have a light blueish recortification, retain parts o…

A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-triangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is convex and has four predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises. All edges have short parallel flaking and semi- abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is concave and has ripples of percussion emanating from the distal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is dark grey in colour with some cream inclusions throughout. Length: 43.28mm, Width: 32.81mm, Thickness: 10.22mm, Weight: 14.5g.

A secondary flint waste flake of uncertain (Mesolithic to Bronze Age ) date. The proximal end of the sub-triangular flake exhibits a prominent bulb-of-percussion and bulb scar, beneath which is a conchoidal fracture. The proximal end of the flake retains some of the original flint cortex. On the dorsal surface, arrises separate three flake removal scars. The edges of the flake are chipped, probably as a result of post-depositional damage. The exposed flint is dark grey and unpatinated. Length:28.1mm; width:40.1mm; thickness: 7.6mm. Weight: 8.34g

Flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date. Measures 125.6mm long, by 82.9mm wide, by 34.4mm thick. Weight = 324.5g. Thought to be Lower Palaeolithic due to the fact that a flake has been deliberately removed from one of the edges, thus creating a scraping edge.

Four waste flint flakes found as part of a spread of similar material (see notes). Flint 1: Measures 48.2mm wide by 39mm high and 10.6mm thick. It has a bulb of percussion at the top and a weathered surface. Weight = 28.31g. It has been struck from a large flint nodule. Flint 2: Measures 47.2mm high by 24.5mm wide and 8.7mm thick. It has a bulb of percussion on one side and, on the otherwise unworked reverse, there is a flake removal scar measuring 22.5mm high by 9.5mm wide. Weight = 15.11g. It appears to have been struck vertically from a flint nodule in order to form a…

Flint scraper of probable early Neolithic date. Made of a light grey to white flint. The front of the implement can be described in two halves. The upper half has received no retouching and is irregular in shape, whilst the lower half has been significantly retouched to form a rounded scraping edge 30.6mm across. The reverse has received no retouching work and there is a bulb of percussion visible at the unworked top end. The implement measures 43.2mm long and 8.5mm thick. Weight = 12.72g.

A flint core of probable late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The core has a sub-oval platform and has been worked around most of its perimeter by the removal of several narrow blade flakes. There is chipping around the edges of the platform, which shows an attempt to maintain the shape of the core. The flint is yellowish-grey in colour with some light greyish-blue patination. It measures 40.7mm high by 30.9mm wide and 22.4mm thick. It weighs 28.93g.

The upper surface has two angled vertical faces which sit either side of a flat central vertical face. Both of the angled faces have been significantly re-touched with approximately two rows of pressure flaked chips. The horizontal edges have been deliberately squared off. The reverse has rippling but no bulb of percussion. The flint is a mid yellowish-brown. It weighs 4.72g.

A bifacially knapped fragmentary handaxe of a yellow-brown flint. It is very coarsely knapped, with large and angular removals covering both faces. the flint itself is somewhat freckled and mottled with darker brown spots, in addition to some quite significant iron staining on the ventral face, where cracks and scarring are also clearly visible. It is suggested to be of Lower Palaeolithic date.

An elongate bifacially flaked pick or axe-rough but dating to a probable mesolithic period, The object is made on a broken tabular nodule of probably opaque pale grey mottled flint, there is rough and often deep flaking on both faces resulting in centre axial ridges. Both faces retain traces of chalky cortex and both margins are markedly irregular and have traces of deliberate battering or dressing. One end of the object tapers to a blunt point where it has broke off, the other is blunt thick and squared-off and has a lozenge shaped cross-section, consisting largely of naturally fract…

An abraded and rolled flint handaxe of probable Lower Palaeolithic date. It is oval in form, pointed oval in section, struck from a grey flint with grey/white patination and some orange/brown iron staining, retaining a small amount of cortex at the striking platform. The surfaces have bifacial flake removal and very abraded edges resultant from post-depositional damage and glacial rolling. It measures 81.93mm in length, 72.81mm in width, 26.97mm in thickness and 197.88g in weight. this handaxe is of Lower Palaeolithic date, c.500,000-40,000 BC.
